Is joining the union mandatory?

I'm being told to fill out the papers to join the union or "they" will remove me from the schedule. I've been working with the company for about 6-7 months now. I had initially, months ago, filled out the papers to join the union and sent them off but they never got them, since I never joined it I figured I may as well not join at all (the application seems to imply that involvement is voluntary). Anyway, some months after that I did talk with the union steward to get a copy of the contract with my store, mostly out of curiosity, they found out then I still wasn't in the union and now some weeks after that my dept. lead hands me another app and says I have to fill it out.

Some states it is mandatory.  What state are you in?

California is mandatory.

Ask an employee that has been there a long time.

Thanks Kroagrr, that's pretty much the sort of thing I was looking for.

Thank goodness Texas isn't required!  Although I do enjoy the benefits of Kroger being in a Union store, I don't like the thought of the the union supporting the Democrat Party.  That means any money coming out of your pockets can go straight to theirs.  I did belong to the union for quite a few years, but after trying to apply for a scholarship for my daughter only to be told she probably wouldn't get it, seems they don't care about a person's qualifications only if they are of a certain race (in other words non-white), I was very much offended!  I could understand if it was a scholarship for minorities, but it's a scholarship for children of Kroger employees that are members of the union.  I got out and told them my money will be better spent on helping my daughter through college!  They will never get a penny from me again! I will quit before that happens!
