Unless its changed...no Kroger does not recognize it as a holiday. Unless Im forgetting one there are 7 paid holidays- Easter, Memorial Day, July 4, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Years
Well, that sucks. I figured it would be since it's a Federal holiday and I thought that such a classification meant something. I've been lucky to get the same hours as usual, but now I'm back to not making enough money and missing that holiday pay boost.

In orientation they give you an employee handbook and go over the content with you. The holidays are listed in the handbook. At the end of the handbook there is a sheet that lists the contents of the handbook and a place for your signature saying you have read and understand the handbook.
Even if you forgot, all you have to do is look in the handbook.

Federal holiday or not it's not considered. Also many dont know but holiday pay is an incentive, not a law. Some businesses may observe more or less holidays for holiday pay.
They don't give out employee handbooks in training. It's one more thing they'd have to do, and it would waste too much paper since the turnover rate is so high.
Also, knowledge is power. Without a handbook, they get to decide what the rules are and enforce them however they please.
I had to ask for one after I was hired, and they looked at me like I was asking for a building permit. It took the store secretary a week to print it for me.
They don't hand those out openly, either. If the employees knew about the union, they'd be able to have better control over the crap that happens each day.
Then again, it sadly depends on the store...
+1 to that! I remember our store tried to tell everyone with a note by the time clocks that if you called in sick (even if its your first time) you have to have a doctor's note. Interesting I thought, I recall my union contract says we have to have a doctor's note only after the 3rd call in. They took the note down the first time so I guess someone mentioned that little fact to them. Then it was up again but this time saying how its in our Kroger Handbook lol. Um I don't recall that either but still Union contract stands first for union represented employees. It was taken down even sooner the second time. ;)

You should just start making some random signs for the time clock quoting the union handbook. "Section 2.5,VACATION DAYS". Section 1.3 SCHEDULE "No employee will be schedule less that 15 hours" etc. Post them every now and then. Don't get caught.
