So I have a cold (runny nose, constantly coughing, etc) And I'm scheduled to work from 3:30pm-11pm but I just don't see my self making it that long
I've been a courtesy clerk for about three weeks now (I know that's not long, just some insight) and majority of the time they have me on lot duty and its been freezing the last few nights which will only make my cold worse. My immune system is not as strong as most due to the side effects of my medication I take for Crohn's Disease. And to make matters worse, my insurance just ran out.
I've already had one unapproved absence due to a family emergency. I don't know what to do...
I would get a manager on the phone, tell them your situation, and work it where you'll come in if you can work inside. If you're cool enough to work with them like that instead of just calling off, I think they'll work with you too.
@Anonymous When I had a family emergency and tried to call in they told me that I could be late but there was no way they were giving me the full day off and if I did not come in that day it would be an unapproved absence.
I just transferred from my first location I was cross trained and worked in either the bakery or drug/gm. Drug/gm was pretty layed back and if I had to call in bc of being sick it was never and issue. It wasn't continuous but once or twice. in the bakery, i was written up once for not calling in 2 hours ahead (which no one had ever told me before, but then again im sure i had to have read it somewhere.) I transfered locations bc it was closer to where I lived and I could walk to and from work. I am a college student, with out a car, so walking is my main mode of transportation. Thus my knees aren't always the best. Its never been much of a problem, but recently I've been to see the doctor and their isnt much they can do for a college student who can really afford to get xrays and such. any ways, I had to call in for the first time, I just condition in my department at my new location. I called in an hour ahead, bc I was hoping the pain would go away as I got up and about but it didnt. I work the 6am shift and thus when I called in non of the managers were there. I left a message with the associate who I spoke with, explained my situation and he said he'd mentioned it to someone when he saw them, but to make sure to call back around 7 bc thats when the managers would start to show up. So I took down his name, wrote everthing out, and I'm planning to call back. I just don't want to get into too much trouble bc I do really need this job. I'm a college student after all. But what more could I do, when I literally cant put too much pressure on my knee right now, let alone walk to work or around work. Can they fire me for this? I know I called in an hour vs 2 hours ahead of time, but even if I had called in right when I got up and the pain started, Its not like I would have gotten a hold of any manager.

You already have a post about this. If you can't work then you can't work. Call your doctor and explain and see if they can write you a note. If you are close enough to walk to work, then ask someone to come get you. I used to walk to work and if it was bad rainy weather I would call and they would send someone to pick me up. They can probably help you.
