Transfering departments. Pharmacy
Permalink

hello all,

I've been with the company for almost 9 years now. I started as a bagger, worked my way up from the bottom all the way to the top. I move departments when I turned 18 and went to the fuel center, again I was on the bottom and moved all the way up and became the fuel lead. I came to a stand still when management wouldn't give me full time. I decided then it was time to move. I decided to go to the pharmacy..any tips or heads up I should know before going in there.

Thank you

I would check and see if you need to be licensed to work in the pharmacy in your state.  If they will let you just be a cashier, ask them what training you need.

hello~ pharmacy tech here!

like the last anon said, check with your state about what kind of license you'll need. I know for Texas (Texas State Board site) you'll need to register as a technician in training. You need this to work, and you have either 1 or 2 years to obtain a national certification (PTCB site). Once you've passed their exam, your status will change to a Pharmacy Technician with the state board. The PTCB certification is needed regardless of state, I'm sure. Check with your store's pharmacy they should be able to tell you. Also, ask if they're able to take on tech trainees. If not, you'll have to find a Kroger that can and will. There's two ways techs get their education: Self-taught, or through a program. If you decide to go the program route, do not go to a for-profit school (Remington College, ITT-Tech type schools). I've heard too many stories of people being stuck with 10k+ debt and no certification to show for it. I suggest you check the local community colleges. You can check their websites. They're usually a year long, and you can take classes and work in a pharmacy at the same time.

Now, as far as full time goes (this is the word of one tech, so things may be different where you are): There's no promise of full-time status. There's usually one full-time lead tech per pharmacy (two if the pharmacy is big and has a lot of techs), and it may be one of those things where someone will have to be fired or quit in order to obtain it. Usually the lead tech is someone who has been there for a long time. That's what I've seen. The ages vary. Some techs are older, and some techs are younger (and usually in college) and don't really care for full time.

I don't think it's the answer you were looking for, but don't let that stop you from being a pharmacy tech! We always need warm bod--  I mean, hard-working technicians, uh-huh biggrin It feels like a world separate from the rest of the store sometimes. Pharmacy gets left out of the main store happenings like huddles (and parties :/), at least at the stores I've been to. It's retail so you still got that aspect but it's decently fun.

Good luck!
