Being a dept head is a fate worse than death, been with the company nearly a decade. We got a new store manager from another division. He is a complete ******* no people skills, terrible with customers and employees but no one up top gives a crap. I'm being harassed and written up, this guy has a vendetta against me, I never had a problem before him. I work hard and know my job I'm not sure why this is happening I can see why our turnover rate is so high and they are desperate for dept heads. I'm on the verge of walking out daily I have proven that the write ups are bs getting written up for emails they never sent me, things that happened on my day off, etc. I'm going to union but I just can't take this anymore. I thought working hard and being knowledgeable would help you in your career but it only has seemed to penalize me I see all of the idiots and backstabbers go to the top while I sit here getting thrown under the bus for trying to support my people and be a decent human being.
I'm going to give you 100% opposite advice from the above post. Yes, you are under attack for what ever reason. When any one starts with the write ups, they're trying to get you fired. Period. So it's time for you to stand up for your job like it's a street fight.
A) Document everything---and have witnesses sign and date the incidents.
B) Yes, get the union involved. STAY ON THEM.
C) Go up the ladder correctly---i.e., start with his boss, go to that person's boss, on and on up. Tricky here, because it's completely an individual choice how much risk you want to take.
D) Again: This IS real. Don't let anyone try having you think 'oh, you're taking this too personal, just do a better job, just sit down, just shut up...' No. Again: write ups?
Guy has been there almost a year i was hoping it would stop too but it comes in waves he put me on overnights for no reason as a dept head for months because he felt like it and my entire dept suffered and somehow that was my fault (he wanted to get load off floor by 6am??? I'm not grocery btw) he has told other employees that I do nothing all day so I know he does not like me but while I'm working in my aisle trying to fill holes, condition, order, throw load, returns, etc etc they sit in office all day and say they never see me work hmmmm maybe because you're never on the floor? Things just keep getting worse and stupid little me trying to play nice have just been taking it like an idiot. He has told me I will never advance in company because I have to go through him I have my degree been there years have the experience wanted to do md1 the last few times it was posted but I can't do anything at this point they keep writing me up for poor job performanice and I do a good job even my supervisor says so. He has also shoved his fingers into the back of my neck and once pushed me out of the way for a customer and also told me I should wear makeup more often this isn't right. :(
considering stepping down and going back to school but I'd rather not take the pay cut I just can't deal with this anymore they are trying to fire me latest write up was straight lies I proved it they don't care.
Oh and the classic move of being called to cashier all day is in effect as well so I'm screwed no matter what I do lol I don't even mind cashierinf just can't stand getting in trouble fir not completing tasks when you're chained to a register all day
Yeah, you just need out of there. Everything you described tell me the $$ is the only thing keeping you, but even if you start fresh somewhere else making less, so what? You'll have your dignity and peace of mind. Now. Meanwhile....
Get this guy on any kind of harassment charge you can. Make it your personal mission to make his life as miserable as you can----work things right, who knows, you could maybe get a nice pay day out of it all besides.
I have been writing everything down I can only hope one of the union or hr people will read my book and give a crap about what's going on I've asked for a transfer months ago told I had to wait a few months I can't wait anymore I don't even hate my job or my store just dont want to lose my job because this douche doesn't like me. I'm looking for work elsewhere but nothing is panning out for me I feel like they see you only have grocery experience and automatically rule you out.

The next time he touches or shoves you, no matter how minor, scream OUCH, OWWW, THAT HURT! Make a BIG DEAL out of it. If anyone is around yell "DID YOU SEE THAT?" If you can record him. This isn't right. Don't let him get away with it. From now on, if he wants to talk to you about your job, DEMAND a union rep be present.

I have to say that I generally dislike the kroger union. I feel they truly do not represent the needs of the workers they represent.
However, that.being said, I can never bring myself to leave the union because I know *******s like this exist.
Sign any write up he tries to give you that you do not feel was fair with "under protest" don't make it look like you're admitting to anything he's accusing you of. Talk to your coordinator, if there is another department head in your district who is unhappy with their situation he may be able to swap you stores.
In the past as a meat department head I had some serious personality conflicts with my store manager that lead to a situation much like yours. In the end I was able to get moved to another store (albeit a ****ty chronically understaffed high shrink high theft store with half useless half crippled untrainable workers underneath me and no second where I'm the only meat cutter) and I still have headaches but I don't feel like someone is gunning for me on the midst of what is already a ****ed up situation (as let's face it most situations I'm kroger are.)

Very, very true. Kinda like the Mafia: you can have a sadist who should maybe be sued or even imprisoned for their behavior, but if they're 'a good earner', their abusive bullsh!t becomes 'well, you know how he is, don't take it personal'.
And that thing about law suits? Yes. That's become everything everywhere now, the game of 'how much sh!t can we get away with before we get caught?'

Is the job worth the stress? Might want to research what would happen if you stepped down. Not an uncommon solution these days. I went through this and stepped down. Kept my full time status as well. Lost a few pennies, but my stress level is almost zero. Goodluck

It's not just sexual harassment, it's harassment period. I'd get a lawyer and file charges against the guy.

Yep we have a dept manager like that..scares everyone and you get "oh you know how he is, just stay away"
