This past Saturday I walked in to the store where I work. I walked up to the manager and asked how he was. (yes I am a nice person) He told me that the store had been very very busy sorry and slow baggers bringing in only 1 or 2 carts at a time. I know myself carts have been missing for about a year. Some are in a ditch that divide our store and a vacant lot next door. Weeds have grown up in the ditch put carts still get pushed down and it's very steep. Anyway I personally don't think the slow baggers are so much the problem. They probably bring in more than 2 I think he was just fustrated. I told him we really need more carts the mid sized not large not small. He did agree he said they cart's are being stolen people take them off and sell them for scrap. I think there should be a way to stop this maybe if it even mean closing at night. I do not really see any reason why we are a 24 hour store. We are the only 24 hour store in town but people can wait until the proper time to shop. They are mostly shoplifting at night anyway stealing small stupid things I find packages in the trash in the restrooms stupid things like batteries or whatever. A $5.00 pack of batteries add up also pain pills pregnancy test all that does add up. We could save allot by just closing at night.
Fit explosives that detonate when the carts are moved beyond the Kroger lot perimeter. That way us employees have something to look forward to when we come into work.
Here's why nothing will be done to replenish those carts: A) they're used a tax write off and B) it gives Kroger more excuse to raise their prices. Like with inventory loss, people don't realize, it's not like the stores just accept the lost profits.
Half of them are in the backroom by the trash chute in my way if your store is anything like mine..
I swear the CCs take trash out to the chute and just leave the carts. We do have about 40 that are broken or squeaky behind the store.
I go in at 10 pm and every once in a while I will take time to get all the carts out of the backroom. My record is 7 large carts, 2 small ones and 3 handbaskets. Everyday, there are empty carts sitting all over the backroom. Stores used to get fined $50 a cart by corporate for any that are in the backroom. If a CC wants to make bonus points with me, they should walk the backroom and collect all the buggies before they clock out.
A CSM noted that there were carts lined up on the side of the building when she left at 11pm. Half were gone when she came back at 730am. Later that week, one of the CCs was counting all the carts at our store. Corporate knows exactly how many each store should have. They needed a count to decide whether to send us more carts.
Yes, scrappers steal them. Scrap prices are real low right now and there is a lot of competition to find scrap. Desperate guys will steal them. There is a system that Kroger can use similar to a invisible dog fence. When the cart leaves the boundary, one of the special wheels locks up.
Theft is constant all day long. Thieves think Kroger is a billion dollar company so they can afford it.
I have figured out that everytime we sell a bundle of firewood that is on a pallet outside, another bundle gets stolen. Only way we will make a profit is to double the price. I am sure the salt is the same way. Lots of water and large bulky items leave the store without being paid for. I am guessing they are in the bottom of the cart and get missed when checking out. I guess no one teaches BOB anymore because those floor level scanners catch everything.(sarcasm)

that wouldn't work. ...they'd just send you out to clean up the blood and organs.
It is the low income apartments down the road..go to that area and start looking around. There are tons of them from old people walking home and dumping them.

So how exactly does corporate "fine" a store? It is all Kroger. And if scrap prices are really low, then why are people bothering with stealing carts anyway?

Dunno. The store loses money from its budget? Employees and vendors are supposed to get fined $25 if they leave a pallet standing on its side.
When a VP Operations Kroger (pick state) visits a store, the last thing you want is for shopping carts to be scattered in the backroom. Even worse if backstock is sitting in them. The store manager gets chewed out if there are.
They have to find more scrap to make up for the low scrap price. That is how they pay bills so they have to find metal somewhere. The scrap yards ask a lot of questions if it looks suspicious. I saw some guys trying to scrap a merry go round once. The scrapyard called the police for that town. I think it had a church park name on it.

Reference/source for that? Really--in this information-starved environment, that would be an interesting one.
Randy the Receiver with 45 years in retail told me about the pallet fine. Told me back in 2009. He would never Bs me would he?
My nephew told me about the cart fine back in 2004. He would Bs me tho! My store co manager told me not to leave carts in the backroom 6 months ago after a visit from a top dog. I asked if anyone let the day grocery manager know. He was the one that would throw endcaps in carts and just randomly drop the cart in the backroom for me to put away because I was tired of working around them. I still find 5-10 empty carts in the backroom on a daily basis. I think they are used mostly by the CCs to take trash out. Occasionally, they will be left by the backdoor with garbage in them waiting to go into the compactor.

lol. Neither is practiced.
I know this was a sarcastic post but is it like a thing in all stores where the dsd receiver has worked since like the beginning of the Kroger company or something? lol
I'm not sure about you guys but where I live the state fines stores for every cart that is found outside of store premises. There's a number that I on the plastic part of the child's seat that has a phone number of some cart pick up service.
Yes, most Receivers have worked at Kroger forever at most stores. They have seniority and most want to work 5am or 6 am shifts. They do mostly paper pushing and rarely stock shelves. The one that replaced Randy has 40 years with Kroger.
I have had to deal with 4 different receivers from 3 different stores. They all have similar personalities. I think the vendors, paperwork and cramped backroom cause them to be extra cranky and rudish. I did some work for Randy 6 months after he retired. It was the most relaxed I had ever seen him be. I got along with him great at work and shrugged it off when he yelled towards me. I was glad to see he had a calm side.
