Got a couple things I'd like advice for from others.

Is changing the bale in a cardboard baler (pull screen down, run it type) hard or easy, as i know ive seen some of the Grocery clerks and Manager do it, but I'd also like to be able to be trained in it in case it comes up and me n another person are there. Grocery Manager told me to just look at the side of the control box and learn it from there, but to never do it lone and always have a spotter / second person assisting you, even said to call him on his portable or page him if i needed help ever with if I wanted to give it a shot. But I'd like some actual hands on with it to kind of learn as well vs trying to do a checklist (also that I do not know where our bail wire is kept either)

During the past few times I've been on shift, customer has asked me about a question for a grocery product on day shift but that we were out of on the floor, so told him I'd go check the back and I'd be right back with him. Of course no one back there, managers not in their office, receiver is gone, and no other clerk in sight, so go to managers office and page for Grocery or MOD to call me, nothing ever came of it. Tried to ring MOD Portable by the direct dial button on the phone and turns out it was in its charger on the other shelf. (facepalm) Only other portable extensions I know are 381 and 386 (usually for ACSM and Dairy / Frozen, but I know we have a few other portables that float.) If a MOD / Grocery doesn't respond to my call page I start floor hunting to try to get an answer for the custy as I'm unsure of how our grocery racking is set up in the back and that's not my area so I don't want to touch it without authorization. Then have to go on a wild goose chase when I get the answer to find the custy as instead of waiting, they've wandered off. Any suggestions how to improve my speed or workflow so I can get back to the custy quickly and not make them think I abandoned them in situations where I cannot get immediate answers. My next thought would of been to call Service desk but I'm unsure of what they'd of been able to do.

Thanks guys.

If it's a dry grocery item and the shelf is empty, it probably means the item didn't come in.  If it's something from bakery, dairy, deli, frozen, meat, or produce, ask someone who works in that department.

The bailer is easy.  You need to be atleast 18 to operate the machine.  You need someone to show you how to change it the first 5 or 10 times to make sure you are doing it correctly and make sure you do not get hurt.  I use 4 wires.  I pull them tight before I wrap them.  Stand to the far side of the bale when it is being dumped.  If the wire breaks, it could slice you badly.  My manager saw a guy get sliced in the arm.  If he hadn't wrapped his arm in meat wrapper and hauled him to the hospital, he would have bled out.

I laugh when this baler complaint comes up.  People spend more time complaining about it than it actually takes to change it.

Search for youtube video.

Step 1: close gaurd door, press to compact.  When it gets close to the low point, hold button and the ram will stop at the low spot.  Newer machines you have to press stop.

Step 2:  Unscrew thingy on the left side to open large door.

Step 3:  Get 4 pieces of wire.  Slide them in channels.  Our lower channels are marked(but you may need help with this.  Basically, first channel, 3rd, 5th and then the last channel on the other side.  I go thru the lower channels first and then into the top channels.  You might need to poke room in the upper channels to get wire thru.  While feeding wire from back, I hook the dump chains up.

Step 4:  Pull wire tight thru eye on other end of wire.  Wrap 5 times, send thru eye again, wrap 5 more times.  Put a pallet in front of machine.  Look both ways to make sure the older courtesy clerk that is always in the way at the worst possible time isn't coming from either direction towards you.  Spin switch clockwise.  Push and hold button to dump bale.

Step 5:  Store bale in Recievers' way.   Unhook dump chains.  Using large pieces of carboard, put a liner down to cover entire bottom of baler.  Close door and tighten door clamp back up.

Step 6:  Congratulations!  You have successfully changed the baler.  You deserve a break now.

If you actually want to learn how to change the bale, I recommend asking an experienced bale changer to help you a couple of times until you are confident enough to do it yourself.  The bales can weigh from 500-1000#.  Once they drop, it will take half the workers in the store to get it off your foot!  Safety first, always.

The only way to know if a product is in the store is to scan it with the telzon and even that isn't always accurate.  The best you can do is glance at the backstock carts to see if it is there and make sure it isn't on an endcap somewhere.  Second best thing you can do is use the Make it Right sticker suggesting a replacement item with a discount.

Safety first, yes...but changing a baler is nothing! The problem is that most people don't WANT to do it, even IF they know how, and that leaves a select few that end up changing it every time...Sad, but true!disbelief

Oh, and make sure you don't pull the wires too tight...I've had enough snap on me when the bale expands to know better!
