Power outage
Permalink

So tonight we had four inches of rain fall in the city. Our store lost power twice around 530ish tonight and the second time, Service desk said "we're calling it" and made an announcement (while the Grocery manager and another manager are in the security office trying to figure out what the hell is going on). Flickered slightly before it did, then went down and all emergencies and emergency aisle lights kick on. (Look like a normal aisle tube light, but are apparently able to continue after a failure) (Second failure was a transformer behind store was hit and caught fire possibly but don't know. Store director was on her way back in as she heard a loud "ka boom" and saw something blow up. Also saw some lightning tonight that made the sky look really red behind the store, freaky ****)

Yea was in the middle of assisting a customer when it went out the first time. Then the second time, was in FE and ended up having to help watch lines to keep custys from walking out with product. (14 of our registers and all Self Check went immediately down after the second time and would not come back up automatically from their emergency shutdown.) So only had two registers that were able to process cash orders and the security office running off the generator. Resulted in a few left behind carts, which were quickly thrown into the liquor cooler in the corners and the door was shut.

Que the second power reboot and then failure, resulting in the master fire panel losing it's mind, Annunciator panel lets out a long beep and siren, then the fire alarm goes off.  Security panels were fine though and continued with their battery backups going. Main Store panel at the service desk had a freak out though and started trouble beeping but the display was dark. Meanwhile CSR and Service desk are running around scrambling. Had to go with another UC to secure liqour. So secure the poles and arm the alarm n sensors in Instant mode rather then waiting for Away mode to click in while we are still pushing custys up front from inside the store.

Que the power coming back on after the customers are mainly gone, and now Store Director is back in and giving orders. So covered everything quickly, only to end up with someone thinking its ok to uncover everything, but power company on scene has not given all clear, so scramble to cover everything back up. We are running about a 12 person staff at this point with three of them outside doing "we're closed" announcements to people pulling in.

Well SD finally had enough and calls overhead for most of the staff by name (me included) to start recovering the bunker product immediately when we found out that ppl were uncovering it when the power came back. Dry ice truck and about 7 refrigerated trucks were ordered and rolling as we got a call about a company truck being parked in dock with a refrigerated truck for a frozen load, so SD says cant unload it and it sits there as SD says let's wait an hour till we decide to pull the coolers and freezers out to see if power company can get the refrigeration systems back online. Was getting near the end of my shift tho n sd told me go home. I told her i'd be willing to stay over but she told me no. She did say since im available today though (Thursday) that she'll call me in if she needs me which i said no prob, just make the call.

Well first rain / flood / power outage / scramble frenzy shift. How was everyone's day? lol

I told her I'd be willing to stay over, but she told me, "No".

Fires and floods, Krogrr management can abide; a quarter-hour "click" of overtime would be a DISASTER.

This reminds me when I was in prison several years ago and there was a huge storm when I was in the shower and the dude we called Ding Wing cause he was always in the psyco wing was standing in the shower by the window when a big lightning bolt hit the electric fence and all the lights flickered and ding wing froze up all the sudden and fell over cause believe it or not his ding wing was touching the water coming out of the shower and electrocuted his ass. Crazy ****! I then got paroled and became a Kroger manager a few days later but they don't know I was locked up

Last week, the whole power, including the internet, went off a almost 2 whole days! It was so hot I couldn't move or think. I so can't wait until it is cold again because the cold is the best part of the year!
