Manager training the newest person
Permalink

For the past few months a young "kid" in our department has been getting preferential treatment by our department leader and old timers in the department. Theyve gave him the early opening hours like 5am and they've been mentoring him to be a department leader. My question is, are they allowed to do this? I haven't been trained like the managers have done for this kid.

Im just curious because I've been here for 5 years and I don't know as much of the RF unit as they taught him and I think it's pretty unfair.

Thanks

Assuming you aren't as dumb as a doorstop and thus unqualified, have a chat with department lead or "old timers" about why they are doing this. If that doesn't work, or you can't/won't confront the involved parties directly, have a chat with your union rep to confirm your options in your area.

What department?

Some new hires are natural with the RF.  Others are dangerous if they know too much about the RF.

Some new hires don't show much interest in learning the RF and could care a less if they know anything about using it.  Others want to know as much as possible.

I have a new hire that has been in the department for 7 months.  He wanders thru the store when he is supposed to be working, is combative to directions, and screwed up a lot of important BOHs.  I don't trust him.  I have another that has been in the department for 4 months.  He does what he is supposed to be doing, follows directions and doesn't give me any attitude.  I trust him.

Your manager is responsible for the newbie if he makes any major mistakes.

If your contract allows it, you can grieve the schedule thru the union.

 For example:

He was warned 4 months ago that he only gets a break when he is clocked out for his break.  This was after he clocked back in from his break and then wandered back into the break room and continued taking a break.  I didn't see it or know about it until after the fact.

The other day he had a break at 12.  I saw him walking back from the break room with coffee at 1.  I was going to confront him tonight if I caught him doing it again and send him home.  But he called in.

I may never trust him.  He wanders too much and needs too much supervision(babysitting).

I train the most qualified and motivated people. I don't build up someone who isn't worth it just because they were there first nor am I required to.

That said, I believe everyone can rise up in some degree, and I constantly encourage people to step it up so I can build a case to increase their wages. It's up to them.
