Customers leaving stuff anywhere and everywhere....

.......Especially temperature-sensitive food items.   This is a great example of the thoughtlessness, inconsideration and pure laziness of SO MANY fellow Americans.  Every day I find all kinds of stuff left randomly in the produce area (where I work) and I know it happens constantly throughout the store.   A sad insight on the CHARACTER of a good percentage of our fellow citizens who are the type of people who just DON'T CARE.  It RANKLES ME!

(And, yes, I know...... plz don't give me a tutorial on the reasons these things happen like "But I changed my mind.............I didn't realize I didn't have enough money for that too.......... I didn't want to walk back to the other end of the store to return it......you Kroger employees are PAID to put it back........)

My question: have any of you employees ever actually seen/caught a customer in the act of leaving something where it absolutely did NOT belong (such as a package of raw chicken on top of the fresh apples table), and did you get enough nerve to say anything to that person? (In a nice way of course biggrin )

Just wondering!

Deli food items left in the soda and chip aisles happens all the time. We were told not to say anything to the customers at all.

What irks me more than anything is "You guys are paid to do this" is no, we are NOT paid to babysit you and your habits/laziness. Babysitters get paid better than we do and they get to raid the fridge and nap.

If I see someone lay something down where it doesn't belong, I'll pick it up and chase after them and say, "Ma'am, (Sir) you forgot this."

^This.

What our customers do is leave crap in hand baskets by the check stands. By the time anyone notices the cold items are warm
To touch. Go figure.

Yeah, had a customer leave handbasket on the floor for 30 minutes and get pissed because I re-shopped the contents. Sorry, how the hell am I supposed to know you're coming back? Plus, why leave it on the floor for someone to trip over?

Shocked me how many times I found raw meat products in the produce department. The worst thing though is when someone drops something on the floor and would just act like it didn't happen, or the people that would just throw those hand sanitization wipes or ads on the floor.

I always kept an eye out for people leaving their stuff everywhere, As I ran the register I was always looking at the people in line that stashed stuff, especially perishables. When that person would up next, I greeted them, excused myself, walked around to the front of the checkstand and would grab what ever they left behind. If it was a perishable, I would explain to them that if I hadn't seen them do it, I would have to throw the item away, due to health regulations. I was always polite, but that sure did embarrass them in front of other people and there was nothing they could do about it. If it was a non perishable, I asked the customer in the future to please hand the item to the cashier. Yes, I would stop, and actually walk around where they ditched the item, usually where the put the black hand baskets. Now... Usually these pigs would be reading a magazine and just throw it on top of the gum and candy or where the gift cards are. I would stop and say excuse me, and tell them to please hand it to me so I could put it back. I would actually put it back before finishing their order. I am always polite, but know that these slobs will think twice about doing it again

Customers at my store would make sure you got a face to face interview with the management boogeyman.

So when I see customers do this, if it's not a perishable, I just simply take the item to the front end and drop it wherever go backs go. I don't have time to run around the store returning items to where they belong because of lazy, inconsiderate, and rude customers. I let the front end do their job, they get the hours for go backs and most of them don't do anything anyway.

what part of the brain says it's ok with leaving hamburger meat in the can goods aisle? What do they actually think will happen with it?

You have to be nice and act like you're doing them a favor when you tell them they left an item behind.  Also, if you can take the time to take an item up front, you can certainly take the time to put it where it belongs.  If you simply take it up front, you're no better than the customer who thinks if they simply leave something somewhere it's no longer their problem.  Of course if it's several items then you put them in a bascart and either take the whole bascart up front or wait for someone to come pick it up.

Man oh man! I cannot believe what I just read!! I wish every single shuffling, slow-walking, self-righteous employee had to work a week on the front end before opening his/her big ignorant mouth!

When I started, everybody started out on the front end.

Unwanted canned goods go into the freezer aisles.

Sundays are especially fun.

Every department always thinks they have it the hardest, but unless you are a CSM or ASCM, you don't have anywhere near as much to worry about on the FE as the other departments. I'm not saying you have an easy job but if you are a cashier, you have one task the whole day, instead of trying to set a whole freaking department by yourself.

I think bakery and deli are the hardest.  You have to wait on customers.  You have to stock the shelves.  And on top of that, you have to make a lot of the product you put out.  Other departments you do one or the other.  Bakery and deli do it all.

The solution is for Kroger to get tough with these people. Institute a "no go backs" policy. We spend too much time putting stuff back. What is in your cart is what the cashier rings up. If we lose a few customers over this, no big deal. We probably aren't the right fit for them anyway.

To be honest, I think when people leave stuff in the checklanes it's because they're embarrassed to say they don't want it.

But they are more embarrassed when I ask them to give me the item, or when I walk around the checkstand to retrieve the item, whether I mention it or not to them.

That's the point.  They don't want to be seen leaving the item.  Calling attention to it just makes it worse.

That is the point.

Embarrass the **** out the customer!! The will never do it again.
