Publix is closed in this area also on Thanksgiving

You pretty much answered your own question. Kroger is open because most other grocery stores are closed. That means there is profit to be made. In the minds of the Kroger execs, that's legit reason enough.

There are plenty of customers that (apparently) feel that we should be open, too. I usually end up having to stand by the entrance with one other person on the days that we close early - those being Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve - and even at closing time/past closing time, there are customers still trying to come into the store. This leads me to believe that at some point, Kroger will be open for normal hours for days like Thanksgiving because, again, there is money to be made.

So you can partially blame corporate America for its greed, but you should also blame your fellow human beings that create the demand for places to be open on days like Thanksgiving. These are the same human beings that have sent a message to corporate America that shopping and deal seeking is more important to them than spending time with family and friends and the result is Black Friday now starts increasingly early on Thanksgiving Day with more and more people skipping Thanksgiving all together so that they can spend the entire day standing/sitting outside a store waiting for it to open just to save some cash.

I don't give a rats a$$ if money is to be made on thanksgiving. I am taking the day off to chill with the fam.
I'll be sure to aquire a doctor's note ASAP to override ANY write up that TRIES to come my way.

Everything you guys said is true. But Kroger does let us in our division leave at five when we close. Kroger will never be open all day thanksgiving or Christmas Day because that's their way of giving something back.

money that's made is instantly lost on the cost of workers.   We have very few shoppers on Thanksgiving.  Most have already gotten the big ticket items earlier.  You won't find a fresh turkey at our store on Thanksgiving.  Anyway, we have like 1-2 people in each department, maybe more in front end, so they can't tell me that they make money when they pay for the employees AND the extra lights that have to be on.

Sure it's "convenient" for the few customers we do have, but  I don't think it's ultimately a profitable day.

Amusingly enough, there is a push in some areas to revise attendance policy interpretation to remove "doctor's notes" from protecting a clerk from a write up.

That's just the opposite of what it says in our contract book in regards to Christmas Day.

"There shall be no work on Christmas Day.  However, the employer shall have the right to be open for business in the event a major competitor or major competitors are open for business.  The store shall be staffed with volunteers and in the event an inadequate number of volunteers are available, the employer shall schedule by inverse seniority."

Maximum-security, minimum-wage, for-profit prison.

This is pretty much on the ball. Although I highly doubt that they would be open for normal hours. Time and a half is a factor, it's one of the reasons why most of us (in my front end department) are off Thanksgiving and such.
They would also most likely run into scheduling issues with people calling off or pulling a no call no show. I have no doubts that they would stay open for normal hours if it didn't mean time and a half, or something else.

Our store does not close at all on Thanksgiving. We are open 24 HRS.

Our people are great! Thanks for all that you do! Did you enjoy your free 3-pack of caramel apples a few weeks ago? You're welcome!

I didn't ask for Thanksgiving off and they scheduled me off anyway.

It sucks, too, because I would have made double time + holiday premium since I'm full time. Extra money in the bank is always a good thing, but now I'm not going to have the opportunity to earn it and that's disappointing. But hey, Kroger's cheap, and they did that to others at my store, too, that make more than new hires. Some of the department heads/leads/long time clerks that I talked to are only scheduled four days next week too with Thanksgiving off.

I've got Thanksgiving off, I haven't had it off in a loooong time. We have 8 cc's coming in, and I KNOW if I had been working, if be joining them to "help out." Nope. So I got it off. I am not answering my phone to ANYONE but family an friends. I don't know how Kroget does not yet realize my phone "breaks itself" during major holidays I have off, the "fixed itself" when I return back to work.

A whole mess of questions await when I return Friday about why don't I answer my phone, etc etc.

Atl is open normal hours on thanksgiving. It's ridiculous. And almost no one wants to work thanksgiving yet because publix is closed you're going to be swamped by last minute shopping.
