Everything about the bakery sucks well sometimes or most of the time if you have enough people it doesn't but when it's just you and a lazy ass department manager and crazy ass store manager it's pretty sucky.
The job itself doesn't suck, but yes, when you are one of the most understaffed departments, but yet the one with the most actual production time (making these things takes time and labor, people!!), and the people they hire for you are lazy and slow, or you have a lazy/slow department head, then yes it would suck.
I love the bakery department, but having a good crew and manager is everything.
Yea, I like the work. But as far as I've observed problems typically arise(at least at my store): 1. Expectations and priorities are in 2 totally different time zones. As 4hrrush was saying, it takes time to make a lot of things and do a lot of stuff back there. That sometimes the dept. head and manger doesn't even realize it takes but still expects us to get things out by the snap of their fingers. Just not gonna happen. As well as the fact that at least at our old store, there was an understanding about having time to end baking stuff and actually go about cleaning things up for the night. We can't do proper cleaning if you are still expecting a boat load of cookies and bread to get out. Just not realistic.
2. Not being realistic about scheduling. I swear this and my first point are hyper inter-changeable most days. As they expect one person to do 20 to 50 jobs and yet you can't realistically do that without something else not being properly taken care of. Primarily getting the floor set, doing the truck(which rarely gets off the floor by 9, as sometimes it takes other dept. just as long to get their stuff off the truck first and leaves Bakery nearly half an hour before 9 to get their stuff not only hooked up and back to the bakery and also to break it down and make sure it's all organized in the freezer.
3. Communication or lack there of is definitely another problem. I know no one likes to hear folks bitching or complaining all the time about stuff going on. But dude, if you aren't going to allow for a forum to express what is really going on. It's just going to lead to more of a pressure cooker environment where folks are snapping and fussing at each other. Can really take a good day down to why did I even bother coming in today?
4. Making things all about the money! I get it that we are in the business of doing that and of course helping and doing the 3 A's for the customers. HOWEVER, I wish we would have more huddles about ways in which to work together as a team or something in the dept. Vs. "we made 36,000 or whatever way to go!"
But again could just be because I'm new. And will add too, that just because someone is slow doesn't always mean they aren't getting their job done. I work with a chick now, that is practically running around the sales floor, back behind the counter, in and out of the freezer all the time. And yet, she is bitching at me for not doing enough stuff. But um, from the time I get into the dept. from the time I leave, I'm doing my job. Hell half the time I'm doing 7 jobs before I even hear someone else mention they are taking their first break. And it's not because I'm taking so long to get everything done. It's because I can be in the middle of something, pulled off it to do something else, and then something further, etc. A thousand times over. And while I am doing them, I'm not going slow as a turtle, but I for damn sure am not running around like a chicken with it's head cut off either. Time may go quickly, but dude I'm also not burning myself out each and every day at work.
What gets me though is the peeps that come into work not prepared for the job. I mean we are all up to 8 hours/40 hours a week. And I still hear some people saying I haven't eaten anything since yesterday or I'm so tired. Nothing against stuff like that in the normal sense. But since it's not really a sit down job and we can't have water bottles or anything back behind the counter. And we are always on our feet. I think it's a pretty good idea to grab something to eat and drink on before you come in. So we don't have any one passing out again. Which I think is far more important than how someone is doing the job at their own pace.
Yes, it sucks. Evening particularly: clean up, wash all pans, floors racks, mop all floors, empty all trash, break down all boxes; bake, box, and label 6-10 racks of cookies; wait on customers. All from 4-10pm.
First time I did it I had 2 hrs of hanging with someone who did it and then it was cast upon me to do.
Sucked so bad I would have quit if they had not been desperate for another suckwr to work the deli where they could not keep employees either. At least I was not closing alone, but that sucked too.
