Answering phone calls after closing time
Permalink

I work in the bakery dept and we close at 9pm. We got a phone call around 9:30pm. My dept manager said to not answer it since we are closed but someone from the front end pages us to answer it. I told her we were closed and she started going and on about how since someone is in the dept someone needs to answer it. I just laughed and answered it anyway. However, when customer service closes at 8pm the phones are constantly ringing and no one is answering the phones. So what is the difference? Thoughts?

Never answer the phone on holidays. Are u open today? Waste of time. If someone needs me and its important, they will call my cell. I don't need to answer the front end phone. We all ignore it. Im the FEM.

What was the phone call about?

I work overnight so I answer the phone.  There are 3 cashiers standing around talking and they can't answer a simple dairy question?  I have too much work and not enough time but I stop and take the calls anyway.

We close at 12.  I had a customer 15 miles away asking if the fuel station was open.  They close at 11.  Had another customer call at 1am and ask questions about clicklist.  I also have an elderly lady call at 3 am and ask the date every couple of weeks.  But, she calls during the daytime too.

What state are you in where your DH says not to take calls once your closed? O_O I swear I wished mind did. Hell we can't even adhere to the sign that says we are open 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. let alone REFUSE any customer help at that time.

I so wish we could though. Cause when customers are calling at that time, it's usually to complain that the cake they ordered was half chocolate/half white like they thought. And want to witch about us just doing whatever we want to do, etc. etc. When it would just make more sense to get into contact with customer service and let them get you a refund or something. As there is nothing the remaining clerks can do about you not being satisfied with what happened with your cake. As ALL of our managers are typically already GONE for the day well before even 8 o'clock hits.

And it's not like they have told us anything we could say or do for a customer in such situations. So what is the point of us even answering in the first place so late? And with it being graduation, baby shower, etc. season going on right now. Ordering a cake that late for Saturday just ain't going to happen either. So again, an essential waste of answering calls so late in the first place.

We close our deli at 8:30 pm. Any calls that come in are unanswered. NO exceptions. EVEN if FEM or someone from front end pages us to answer.

Yea, our Deli closes at 8:30 or so as well. But people only call over there to ask if the pizza shop is still open. The problem is though, that the customers instead of calling to see if we are still open. They just pretty much do all their shopping and then come up to the counter before heading to check out and expect folks to still cut their meat and cheese for them. But can't really do that once the machines have been cleaned for the night. And whatever is left of the grab and go stuff just never seems to make them all that happy either. So kind of a no win.

That reminds me. A Manager told me he came to check the store on Christmas. He said when he got there the phone was ringing. When he left the phone was ringing. Other managers said when they went the phone was ringing. They did not answer.
