finally putting in notice
Permalink

i'm putting in my two week notice tomorrow. i don't have access to the printer, so i'm going to write it by hand, one for the store manager and one for the department manager. any advice? my last day of available to work is going to be either friday the 30th, saturday the 1st or july 3rd; i can't decide. if i list the 30th as my final day but i'm on the schedule for the 1st (our store schedules two weeks in advance), do i have to work on the 1st, or do they have to write me off that day? yes, i realize i can leave whenever i want, but i want to be re-eligible for hire with the company and to make a professional exit. and what do i say in my notice? i hate this job, but i understand you can't or shouldn't say anything negative.

I'd suggest keeping it short and sweet. Start out with a to whom it may concern, I would like to say that I appreciate the opportunity of working with/for you for the last (however long you were there for). But I am making it known that I'm putting in my 2 week notice and my last official work day will be(whatever date you decide on, as they will figure things out schedule wise once they have a definitive leave date).

Not too many details, but straight to the point. Although, you could add in there that you had another opportunity present itself and will no longer be able to work for them. I think for most of the college students that is how they have went about it. Especially if they were moving to the main campus and would no longer be in the area to physically be able to work at the local Kroger.

And actually I think leaving any kind of notice(as long as it isn't super witchy and rant filled), would be deemed professional. Actually FAR more professional than doing a bunch of no call, no shows that some people do.

i'm actually not sure if i have another opportunity waiting for me; i applied at a restaurant a little over a month ago, and that manager called kroger hr and then called me back the following week, but i didn't end up calling him back because it had taken him too long to return the call and my heart changed about kroger. i may see if he's still looking or just figure it out as i go. a lot of people tougher then i am stay at kroger/min wage job that is equally or more ****ty -- kudos to them -- but it's killing my soul. i already quit drinking as a result of the job, which is good, but that kind of wholesome change in my life is what inspires my leaving. the job's not hard, and for that i ought to be grateful, but there is constant drama, lying, duplicitousness, and overall stress. i lost track of what i was saying with this rant, but it's time for me to move on, even if i end up destitute.

btw, this may seem like a dumb question: can i call in sick during the two-week period?

 Yes.

But if you want to leave on good terms with your store manager, the person who will have the final say in rehiring you back, if they choose to, you should work the entire 2 weeks. If you want to leave on the 30th, but you work on the 1st, you should make the last day of that week your last day. Don't mess up the schedule by not working days you were specifically scheduled for. That just pisses everyone off when they have to cover for you and again, don't leave on bad terms and burn bridges. You can call in sick if you are actually sick, of course, but again... You never know when you might need this job at Kroger in the future.

I recommend trying Wal-Mart if you are looking for another retail place.
