Mini Rant: You Should Feel Grateful Because....

Ever hear once you come onto your shift or walk into your department, all the oh so 'wonderful' things you should be grateful for from your co-workers? And doesn't it always make you want to karate chop a few of em in the neck for saying it in the first place?

Like for instance since I've been on closing a hell of a lot lately. Soon as I come in at say 2 p.m. or whenever my shift starts. Where my co-workers used to be all about the witching about wasn't getting done. Now it's (insert my name, said with such enthusiasm) and the fact that someone ran cardboard to the baler. Or how they managed to get the baking done before I arrived. Or my personal fave, how the DH and back up manager had to really put in a good bit of extra work, cause the opener called off. And let's not forget when they've actually managed to get someone to come over and help me package all those baked goodies for the night.

And don't get me wrong, I'm appreciative that these things happen and they help things run a bit more smoothly. But you ever feel like(if you have co-workers like this) spend a wee bit TOO much time patting themselves on the back for doing these things, for like one day? And then it's back to nobody seeing that the trash is damn near crawling out the back door, they are only beginning to bake once I arrive on shift, the DH is still out there yammering away with the store manager and not helping out as much, and when you need help, it's like some folks turn a deaf ear.

So have to say. Hella naw, I don't feel ALL that grateful about it most days(most especially when someone points out that the bread wall isn't as full or the doughnut case is either). Simply because, I know they wouldn't really lift a finger towards helping with them in the first place. So why point it out and be like, it's just such a favor to me cause I'm on closing. A real favor is actually asking for some assistance if they call a blue line earlier in the day or even when I first come on to help me out. Or I don't know, start the baking a bit earlier in the morning more often in the first place, so I don't have to finish that, package, label AND fill the floor by the end of the night. And even better yet, DH and back up manager(whom, I give some slack to as she does a lot of stuff already), pitch in more often in the first place, regardless if someone calls off or not. That way, it's not like you are sounding like an angry bear going around grunting cause you actually had to cover someone else's work. More team work, means less of an headache.

Rant over. But curious anybody else go through this in their department? And does it annoy/piss you off as much? Or are you used to it by now?/Don't pay much attention to it? Do YOU, ever really feel grateful when your co-workers point out such things?

None of my co-workers have actually ever said that, but I can come up with a few apt analogous situations in my department (Front End)

Like this old bagger who transferred here a few months ago. When we had some downtime he would rant to us cashiers about how it isn't fair that we get raises and they don't because we're all a bunch of kids that scan groceries, and why does that happen. Because, y'know, cashiers are rolling in dough apparently, and we control the baggers' raises.

If one of us was scheduled to be a Courtesy Clerk so we're on the cart list, but the supervisor or managers have us on the register all day because we're swamped, he'll bitch about that to us as well. How "They want all these cashiers, but what about the carts!" and even told 2 of the teenage cashiers they need to go get carts. They promptly told him to **** off.

My issue with the guy is, he always gives me rolling eyes and grumbling backtalk whenever I tell him to bag my customers' order a certain way per the customer's instructions.

"They want the cold items in paper, please."

"You didn't TELL ME they wanted paper!"

"Uh yeah, well, I'm telling you NOW because they told me now."

Last week, I was on Express and a customer with a 150 dollar order came through. When she paid for everything, the large registers already had one or two baggers, but THIS bagger was actually just standing around with his thumbs planted firmly up his ass, when I asked him to bag.

He eventually bagged the order, but not before arguing with me FIRST and escalated it into an arguement in front of my customer as I was bagging for her. I turned to my customer and apologized. She didn't seem upset but it still pissed me off.

And before anyone goes feeling sorry for this bagger because he's old making 7.25 an hour, he has another primary job, a wife recieving social security, and he clearly has missed no meals.

I've reported him to my CSM twice and nothing was done, so I will tell him to his face that I don't appreciate the disrespect towards me in front of customers and if it happens again I'm telling one of our co-managers who I know is a hardass.

There's also a less obnoxious example in a younger cashier who said he was mad because I recieved 6 Highly Satisfied survey comments, and he never gets any comments.

"I am an OUTSTANDING cashier nom nom nom nom nom"

He had a bag of Doritos and a Pepsi at his register, as he informed us of this injustice.

Oh trust me I can believe it. I've gotten my fair share of having to finish up the bread slack out a time or 20 in the bakery dept. as well. And having to hear, "oh it's just the sweet goods and bagels." Nothing too difficult for ya. Or when they know they are close to having time run out on them. They are like "I'm hurrying to get this done so you don't have to worry about it(insert my name here) and have a easy night."

Um, there is nothing easy about dealing with all these pies of late for one. And for two, I don't care if it is something simple you are leaving me with or not. I'm totally NOT feeling grateful having to finish off the afternoon shift's work before I can even start my own! Most especially when the store managers are coming around even earlier at night with the Good Close sheets. Seeing what has been finished on closing already so that they can sign off on it or not. And it's like dude, I haven't even begun the closing stuff just yet. Cause I still have cookies to ice, fruit bites and turn overs to package, cookies to package, sometimes complete the slack out, do an order that nobody bothered to get to before I came on, and label everything. And THEN, start on closing stuff. Oh and as you pointed out, can't forget the customers along the way in there too with needing help.

Mine haven't either in the exact words of you should be grateful for the things they've done while on that day. But for sure it comes up more than enough times in both tone and stuff like, "at least we got cardboard out or got all the baking done. So you should have a guaranteed easy night". Like I should feel so grateful that they are doing what they should be doing in the first place BEFORE I come on.

And as I said in my original post. It's not like I don't appreciate what they have done. But dude, stop patting yourself on the back so much and pointing out all the stuff you did for the day as if you got something to prove(most especially, when in the next breath, your going to tell me you don't have time to finish your slack out or there is something that needs to be done order wise, that nobody seemed to have time for earlier in the day. So it's up to me to finish their stuff, the order, my closing stuff, help customers, AND keep the sales floor filled). Cause it's not like I can't see that the cookies are done or there isn't that much cardboard. Heck, I can even see when the doughnut case is looking lighter than usual or the bread wall. None of that is the point to me. The point is, I'd be far more grateful if they put as much energy they use into gossiping or talking behind other's backs, as they put into actually getting their work done during the day. Then, I'd truly be grateful to come in and be like wow, it's going to be a great night. As I'm actually coming on to close the dept. and do what I'm supposed to do for the night. Not all the extra stuff left behind.

That's why I'm TRULY grateful, when I get help from some of the Deli peeps. As some of them will come over and actually have a thorough work ethic. And aren't all "lookit, I did what I was supposed to. Ain't I makin' your life easier now? Huh, huh?" And the work gets done faster, much more smoothly. Nobody is getting bent out of shape about anything. We truly work as a team and it makes things get done so much more quickly. Makes me actually wish I could come over their way and help out with their closings most nights. But I can never manage to, cause of everything I'm usually left with in my own dept.

As for your situations. Sounds like you have two very attention seeking individuals that really need to be put in their place as well. I'm surprised your supervisor hasn't said anything to them for acting the way they do.

Bakerchick, they do that when the managers aren't there lol...But it would've been hilarious if my CSM walked in on the cashier kid chowing down (he doesn't work our department anymore so he's now a non-issue)

But "attention-seeking behavior" is a spot-on diagnosis for a few of these elderly baggers. They do a halfass job and insist that they are the best of the Front.

I know my co-managers are more likely to back me up on complaints about the baggers. My CSM is burnt out and kind of doesn't give a damn anymore.

Sorry your CSM is burned out though. And in general you have to put up with co-buttholes like the rest of them in general Lane Hardy. It just sucks when you have to deal with any kind of BS for so long.
