Manager backup shift policy
Permalink

Im a backup deli manager, been working here for years. All of a sudden i was told i have to work one night shift a week? Can anyone confirm this for a backup manager? I cant find the policy on shifts anywhere and its not a requirement in the union contract. I dont get paid enough for this. I know department heads and store management has to but ive never heard of backups having to.

I can't officially confirm or deny it for you. But all I can say is that out of experience, I have seen one of our more experienced back up managers(who used to be back up in our old store, but turned into the deli back up at our new store), work a night shift a week. But she also does the dinners for Friday at our store too. But yea, I think for the night shift, she is there til 10 or later at times helping out with chicken shop stuff. But honestly not sure if it's do to her changing her schedule or a policy thing or not.

Yeah, i have to work 5am-1:30 2 days a week (i cover our bakers days off we have no one else that knows how), so im really upset about having to throw in a 12:30-9 shift on top of what I already do for them with minimal pay. If i made department head pay i wouldnt be questioning it. But i dont, i dont even make 12 dollars.

Backup manager? As in asst? You're lucky they're making u do one close. Asst are required to do 2  to 3 closes a week some close all week. Dept managers are required to close one day out of the week

Around here, deli assistants work 2 nights a week and the managers have to do 1.

Ha, don't tell my DH that. I think the only times he has closed since we've been at the market place was like 2 nights when I wasn't able to fill in for another closer that had kept calling off/no showing. And trust me, he was not a happy camper about it at ALL.

Most likely cause he would rather come in earlier in the day vs. be on closing. But that is just wow that at your store the back up managers get 2 to 3 closes a week. As I said, for my store from what I've seen. The more experienced Deli back up, is there at least 2 nights. And one is just cause our store has special Friday dinners that she cooks up. But I don't think I've EVER seen the other Deli back up do a close. She is always out of there by 6 or 7.

Our back up bakery manager at most stays a few mins over 5 p.m.(her usual leave time) to finish the CAP report and maybe help to package cookies one time. Beyond that, don't think I've seen her stay for a close either.

If you're not being paid extra on top of what a normal clerk with your amount of time is being paid, then don't be a back up manager.  They're just trying to get more work out of you without having to compensate you.

I make more than others i just dont feel like I make enough. Like i said after 8 years and 4 different stores i have never heard of this being a policy. If anyone has some insight on what our current policy is please let me know.

It's always been policy to have the head and back up on opposite shifts and to have either one doing 2 evenings a week. Some stores with multiple back ups have one doing evenings every day. It's just smarter to have your team getting direction from one of the managers for most of the day. Keeps workers more productive. If you're the official back up, your pay seems really low (or in the Atlanta region, their contracts usually suck) If you see heads not doing closes, you can bring that up to store management. They're required to work 2 evening shifts a week. If they try to excuse their scheduling because they don't have certain people trained to work certain shifts, they need to train those people (responsibilities of being the DH)

Here in the Columbus division the department heads and back ups need to work one night a week. They can make you work two if they wanted but no more than that. A third scheduled night shift is overtime.

I guess that does explain it. As I am in the Columbus division. But I still think they should have our DH do at least one close a week. I mean, heck he is off so early at times, that he is back in the store with his grandkids shopping sometimes. And it's like dude, could have used the extra hands with the sales floor or these freaking pies and stuff that need packaged, ya know? But nevermind then, keep on shopping.

Our department head does close at least once a week along with the back up, but other days she is always out of there by 2. I think she should be working at 8-4 or at least 9-5 through the week to work with some of the other people in the department to train them properly.

As a Deli Assistant Manager (not sure if its the same thing) I usually am and have been expected to close 6 nights a week with the occasional early am shift when the day crew is shorthanded. Y'all are lucky to only have to do it once or twice/week.
