All the newer, obscure songs sound very much the same to me. Not sure if our store playlist is anything like what is playing in other stores, but when you are somewhat far away from a speaker (and the sound system in this store is horrible, tinny, bad in the first place) every song sounds like a faintly wailing, moaning, whining or shrieking banshee.
One of my pet peeves...............basically,not very many of the older, classic easy listening/pop songs (esp from the 1970s) are "allowed" ...............they include one token song from Olivia Newton John (Please, Mr. Please), Two token songs from Helen Reddy (Angie Baby and You and Me against the World), one or two songs from Stevie Wonder, very little (or nothing) is played from great artists like Carpenters, Foreigner, Stylistics, Gordon Lightfoot, Glen Campbell, Bread, John Denver, B. J. Thomas, Maxine Nightingale, Elvis Presley, ABBA, Barbra Streisand, Paul Anka, Neil Sedaka, Carly Simon (one song-You're so vain), Nilsson, Roberta Flack, Lobo, Simon & Garfunkel, Eagles, Chic, Commodores, REO SPeedwagon, Queen, Air Supply, Spinners, Blue Magic, John Mellencamp, Willie nelson, Journey, KC & the Sunshine band, Fleetwood Mac (maybe a song or two), Bee Gees, Mariah Carey, Neil Diamond, Kenny Rogers, Whitney Houston(well, maybe one song),Elton John (with the exception of a couple of his crappier songs like Island Girl, about a prostitute). the list goes on and on .......have the Kroger company hotshots realized there is a whole wide world of choices out there when playing music for their stores? Ever heard of Pandora? I-Heart Radio? I guess Kroger can't 'afford' anything better than I S A N for their customers.
Well, the wonderful In-Store Audio Network is at it again...Playing the same songs three times within the hour...If you're looking to identify a song you've heard in a Kroger (or a Target...or a Walgreen's...or your local coffee shop, etc.) LOOK NO FURTHER than this thread! Here are 32 more earworms you've most certainly heard on repeat in the recent past!

You think they could be a bit more original, no???
I've had this one song driving me insane that last few weeks because it always plays, yet I can't find it because I don't understand the lyrics. It's a doo-wop song that goes something like "and it was something a-something something something something, SOMETHING falsetto annoying bit, something and the somethings, that's you" I realize that isn't going on much but it is definitely one of the oldest songs that plays, probably from the 50s or early 60s.

At my store they play approximately ZERO songs from the 1950s. They used to, back when we had the "SENIOR DAY" on Wednesday, which then moved to Thursdays for about a year, but now it is just a mix of boring 1980s/1990s and 2000s pop, with a few borderline-obnoxious older songs (such as "YOU'RE NO GOOD!" by Linda Ronstadt-----hey, Kroger corporate, ain't that some great lyrics for our faithful customers' listening pleasure).

We do that at our store, too, but that one oldies song plays every now and then and it is so annoying and out of touch with everything else that it becomes catchy. I will admit I am 22 and I LOVE oldies, classic rock, and contemporary. I know almost all the famous old hits, but somehow this damn song escapes me haha
Anonymous wrote: "I know almost all the famous old hits, but somehow this damn song escapes me haha"
I'm not sure if you mean "I know almost all the famous old hits played on Kroger" or "I know almost all the famous old hits, say from the rock era of 1955 to about 1980"???
Let me explain why I'm making a differentiation here. Please bear with me and sorry if this gets boring!! From the rock era (lets say 1955, although some may consider it beginning a little earlier or a bit later) up to c.1980, if we consider the "Top 200" songs of each year in that period, they would generally be considered as the "top hits" for each respective year. And that is speaking generically, meaning the top all-around hits, not ultra-specific genres like rock or country, but just the top selling singles and/or the ones that got the most airplay on radio.
So, if we say that just the top 200 songs of each year were "hits" between 1955 to 1980, we come up with 5,000 hit songs. Of course that is just an estimate. There are thousands of other more obscure songs that were recorded and sold that didn't get into the "top 200" of each year.
Being interested in music, and from listening to the In-Store Audio Network over the last 4 years as an employee of Kroger, I am estimating that I've heard maybe only about 400 songs from the period of 1955-1980 EVER played on the music feed.
Doing the math, 400 songs would mean 8 percent of the top songs of the era 1955-1980.
Which, of course would mean that a whopping 92% of songs that were hits in that time period have NOT been played on the music feed.
Honestly, anyone who only knows oldies from listening to Kroger music, doesn't know oldies. (I don't mean to say that you are in that group). I'm just thinking that alot of people who only listen to recent/contemporary music in their own lives outside Kroger, but hear some oldies at work, may not be exposed, or know anything about, the huge inventory of older classic songs that have never been on the playlists, or at least not on the Kroger playlists in these last few years.

Sorry for the misinterpretation. I meant that I grew up on oldies and classic rock from the time frame you spoke of, 1950s through the 1980s. I'm pretty knowledgeable of all the hits from those decades, as well as many of the more obscure, lesser known hits from back then. While I don't know whether or not I've heard 5,000 in total, I figured that Kroger's selection of oldies hits would be popular enough for a fair chunk of customers and employees to recognize each song that comes on. I fall into that chunk that recognizes almost everything from before 1990 and some of the more modern tracks. That is why it got under my skin that the one song I should know is one that I could not put my finger on. If we ever got the chance to meet in person, you would probably have a better understanding of how much of a music nut I truly am haha. It is a bit of a shame that most of my coworkers are around my age and fall into your category of people who mostly get exposed to classics through listening to the In Store Audio Network. Makes it difficult to discuss music with them the way I would with people who grew up in that era.
Its kinda funny the changes over the years with the Music Audio suppliers. When I first started there was 5 options, this was controlled by a box in the ECR room, with 5 genres. What can I say, sometimes rocking to County was what the night needed. It then changed to another company that would allow the music selection to be edited to the neighborhood/community. The last email I saw, basically said all the store were going to play the same music. In reality, I tuned the music out unless it was completely dead in the store. If I heard the music in the store during normal hours it normally meant something was wrong.
Does Kroger WANT us employees to commit suicide? I've been with the company for almost 10 years and I can't take this soundtrack anymore! Not one good song plays anymore. It used to play some good songs (the doors, Stevie ray Vaughn etc) but they overplayed them so much that now I hate them too. I would prefer elevator music or fiesta jams or even SILENCE than have to put up with another 8 hours of Sting and Cher. Thank goodness for our hooded sweatshirts, they hide ear buds very well :)
I don't know if its whats playing throughout the day, but, when I get in a night its playing pop for another hour and starts back up in that genre when I'm leaving. In between that time frame for us it plays rock and then like an hour of country. After hearing Adele 6-7 times a night a small burning hatred has developed for her now unfortunately. I have oddly taking a liking to a song about someone being liken to a tangerine.

Just curious............exactly what were the five genres? Also, how long ago did you get an email about all stores playing the same music?
At my store, they have played the same stale mix for years........a mix of dull 80s/90s pop, alternative rock, a few oldies (like "The night they drove old dixie down" (Joan Baez) and "That's the night that the lights went out in Georgia" (Vicki Lawrence), a tiny selection of disco (Fly Robin Fly -- Silver Convention) and I will Survive (Gloria Gaynor) and some newer (2010-2014) crap.
Plus ONE hour of country from 6AM to 7AM every day (Eastern time) . From how often they repeat the country songs, I would imagine they don't even have enough country songs in their playlist to do more than one hours' worth!!! True Love Ways by Mickey Gilley is played so often it is unbelievable. If any stores do have 100% country 24 hours a day, it must be a baaad case of Repeat City!
They've had several different "networks" over the years.
When I started, almost 18 years ago, my store was 50s in the morning, 60s afternoon, and 70s at night. And it wasn't just funky, disco, AC 70s either. You would hear Zeppelin, Alice Cooper, KISS, Bowie, Queen mixed in with the Bee Gees, Eagles, Captain and Tennille stuff.
Ask your manager, they can change the format.
I think the minimum is every 4-6 months between changes. Although that was a couple years ago before this new network so things might be different.
And I want to see their numbers. Saying, "You're listening to the In Store Audio Network. Heard by over 100 million shoppers a week"? How many stores , both Kroger and Non-Kroger use it?
i work at a Kroger in Tennessee and they play a song that sounds like the band staind. all i can remember is something like " time to set you freeaaaaaa, waiting for the day that" and that is the only part i can remember. I'd really like to find the song but i cant seem to find it by typing those lyrics.
There is a song that is played at Stop and Shop Supermarkets that won't even show up on phone apps when we try to find out who sings it. It sounds like an upbeat pop song sung by a woman. Some of the lyrics are (not in singing order of the song):
"What you get is what you see and there's no games",
"I can only be me",
"You can put me up or you can put me down",
"We may not be sure what tomorrow may bring, so that is why I must be me",
OK, guys...To make it an EVEN 200, I have 50 more wonderful earworms for you...A "Part Five", if you will...I have to say that although I appreciate the newer songs and variety, there is nothing quite as utterly PATHETIC (Yes, PA-THET-IC!) as The In-Store Audio Network when it comes to obscurity and repetition, even within the same hour...Believe me, in the old days, to get a song played on the radio, there would be huge amounts of testing involved...If a song didn't pass muster with a focus group or sample of listeners, it wouldn't get played...If even an AVERAGE radio station played songs THIS obscure, they would be out of business within a week...But OH, somehow, through it all, our beloved In-Store Audio Network does not seem to care about that...Never mind that in this day and age of the Internet and I-Tunes, there are literally MILLIONS if not BILLIONS of songs out there worth hearing that no one will ever know about...Sad, ain't it? Even if they had a greater mix of past and present playlists, I wouldn't mind, but in any case, here are FIFTY more from the standard playlist that you have probably heard at least ONCE this week, if not more often...ENJOY!

Dale Earnhardt Jr had a song? Never knew that. I don't know what channel you store plays, but for the longest time my store had the in that played dy Elmo's fire. Now we have the in that plays jump and welcome to the jungle. Years ago st night, Kroger used to okay Prince and more edgier party stuff.

Don't know what station y'all listen to, but I have heard Mariah Carey, and elton John's song I'm still standing. I have heard Billy Joel, I have heard Tom Petty free falling the Tom version and the John Mayer version. I used to hear several John Mayer songs. I've heard Whitney Houston I wanna dance with somebody, and I'm pretty sure I've heard a couple of John mellencamp songs. Yeah there are some obscure songs, more than I would like, but there are some very popular songs that get played too. And in store audio is how I've discovered some songs by famous artists that I never knew about. I just wish I could hear one song I heard a couple of years ago, by a woman, something like "this is our little secret, no one can no about it, ah ah ahhhh ah ahhh." Could never find that damn song no matter how many times I searched the lyrics, and I've only heard it at one Kroger and one family dollar, and I stopped shopping at that awful Kroger, so now I may never hear it again.

(OP of the paragraph being replied to in this particular post): PLEASE Read my gripey bitchy rant again. I said "very little" is played from most of those artists. meaning, they may play one or two songs (sometimes 3) of such singers as Whitney, Billy Joel, Elton John, Mariah Carey, etc, but they ONLY PLAY a few from each artist, those same songs over and over.......THOSE PARTICULAR FEW SONGS.......over and over and over and over and over and over. But NEVER playing OTHER songs from the same artists that are very good and usually much better. It makes the mix STALE STALE STALE!!! The average artist in the list of singers I first wrote has recorded dozens of songs. Mariah has recorded dozens of songs and I have heard maybe three in the last 4 years,(mostly Dream Lover). Never heard them play her classics such as I'll Be There, Hero, or Without You (remake of Nillsson).
When an audio network only plays one or two or three certain songs, and never ever plays others from that same artist, it is a good indication they have a very poor playlist, cannot afford the royalties to play a wider selection, and/or have dumb-dumbs in their company who don't have knowledge or interest in good classic/oldies music.
There is a large indoor flea market nearby the Kroger where I work. Every time I go in there, the overhead music feed is OBVIOUSLY superior to In-store-Audio-Network. They play a very wide selection of good music, including hits from the 1950s, '70s country, 60s rock, R&B/soul, soft rock from the early 1970s, easy listening, jazz, and other genres. Amazing selection. And I almost never hear the same song again. Always something interesting to hear, not dull and drab tripe. NOT SO with our Kroger, you hear repeats usually within 4 hours or less. And, yeah, I hear "FREE FALLING" way too much, I think it is played every day of the week at least once a day.
Lets face it, we all have a couple tunes we secretly jam to, and of course there are some that are absolutely dreadful.
I personally vote for:
Worst:
The Bangles - Manic Monday
tie with Sheena Easton - Morning Train
Best:
I always find myself wanting to dance to This Girl by Kungs vs Cookin' on Three Burners
and I always have and will love Somewhere only we know by Keane
and that new malibu by miley cyrus is also a guilty pleasure
What do you all think?

I think you have terrible taste, Sheena easton and the bangles are classics. I don't even like manic Monday, but its catchy
Sheena Easton's "MORNING TRAIN" is a classic, BUT (and I mean BUT!!) even the enjoyable songs like this can become dull, irritating, stale, obnoxious and just plain dreadful if they are played EVERY.SINGLE.DAY. for YEARS AND YEARS ON END!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Does that make sense to anyone else besides me?????????????????

Yes, it ABSOLUTELY makes sense! If the radio was a computer, I'd do THIS to it...
What in all that is unholy is the name of the song that starts with guitar, has some trumpets or brass in it, and the chorus is nothing but oh oh oh oh ooooh and unintelligible gibberish? I find that one to be heinously, objectively bad.
They need to add some **** to turn up to. I be baggin fo the weirdest people at least give us so energy thru the music. Whoever on AUX need to be fired a$ap on baby locc
Anybody know a song that goes like " Don't Worry Baby!" and no it's not the beachboys its rock or maybe electronic? they Lyrics might also be wrong but that's what I think I Hear it could also be " Oh Baby Baby!"

"You know the real me."
Any ideas as to what song and who sings it??
I remember they once also played the instrumental of this without the lyrics as well, now they just play the one with the lyrics & the instrumental is no longer played.
