Coworker Can Not Handle Much Stress, real world situations & Little Offends Her
Permalink

I work with a courtesy clerk who can not handle the real world.  It takes very little to offend her.  Apparently sending the items down the check stand belt is too much fore her.  She politely snips that "I got this."  or " . . . too much."  If I see a courtesy clerk at the other end and they want to bag I'll generally pass off bagging to them regardless of how big the order is.  She snips at me that she didn't want to bag the order due to it only being five items.  Which highly offended her.  It's hard to tell how to work in a team with her because if I give her "full" control of the belt on/off siwtch she gets offensive because the items are not coming down the order.  If they pile up she snips a little.  She's very polite about this but as I've quote earlier:  It takes very little to offend her and she obviously can't handle the real world.

What can I do?  I've tried all the team building tactic experiences I've used for my 20+ year career and she just can't handle stress nor the real world.  It takes oh so little to offend her.  I'm about ready to request her not to bag for me but that might be viewed as offensive and discriminatory....

Advice?

Ignore her. Just do your job the correct way and let her do her own thing. It's not your job to cater to another employee.

you can't teach a good work ethic. how old is she? she sounds rather young, maybe even a teenager. probably her first job, or she's inexperienced in the work world.

You've been on the Front End for 20+ years and you give a f**k what a Courtesy Clerk thinks?

Like nightcrewzombie said, Courtesy Clerks like the one you described are usually teens (or special needs people) that don't understand the concept of the job.

It's not about their "comfort" or what they don't wanna do, it's about them serving the customers.

One of them actually got called out by my customer because he was talking to another teen CC after I scanned her order.

I asked one of them to bag for me twice then when one walked away, and I asked the one who remained, he rolled his eyes at me, played with one of the bags for a few seconds THEN finally walked over to bag.

Customer asked him "That's what you get paid for is to bag, right?" He stammered and was embarrassed. Good.

With another one of them I flat out told him that if he argues with me in front of a customer again, I'd report him to management. He hasn't done it since.

But getting back to your situation, tell your FES or CSM about this Clerk's attitude, as it's embarrassing and not being effecient for the customer, which is THE WHOLE POINT of the job.

If her feelings are hurt, tough titty. Either she wants to be there and work or not. It's a job, not social hour.

Not a bad idea.  Polite individual but she can't work in a team and very little offends her.  Customers are priority.  Due to the fact I actually make her work she tends to ignore me and focus all her attention towards other cashiers.  She doesn't bounce like you're suppose to.  Unless it's a big order she tends to just walk right past me.  I'm not the slightest bit politically incorrect but she uses her African American heritage to get her self put first.

I don't care if she's blue with green freckles. Tell your management what is going on, and they'll straighten her out.

If she's in her probationary period and doesn't calm down the special snowflake behavior they'll show her the door.

How exactly is she "using her heritage" to avoid getting scolded?

At my store, I have seen a trend with them hiring young people, and their work ethic being crap, IDK what happened to the youth of America, man. We had one kid who got hired into natural foods that didnt last a week before she quit because she couldnt handle the stress I guess -_-.

It also doesnt help that here they basically just toss new people out to fend for themselves.

She's a damn child.

I'd probably go out of my way to push her buttons.

She is guilty of sin of Pride, sin of Vanity.  She is a child.  She gets her self favored by her skin color.  As Jesus said:  I judge ye not by the flesh but by the heart.  She got so offended by my one request she transferred to a side department.

The biggest problem is her self.  We've concluded that she is not fit for this job.  My managers too favor her due to her skin color.  Jesus said I judge ye not by the flesh but by the heart.
