How to go about transferring stores
Permalink

I want to transfer stores because mine is badly understaffed and I can't continue to work 30+ hours a week in a school week. Will they not allow me to transfer because they are already understaffed, or is it the other store's decision? Who do I talk to to begin the process? Thanks for any help!

Speak to your union Rep.  Not the store steward but the district rep.

If you hired to be part time, they can't force you to work on your unavailable days and times.  They can cut your hours tho...

Generally, part time employees do not transfer stores.  The only option here is to quit and apply at a different store.  Your area/contract might be different.

I've transferred stores both as a part timer and (now) full timer. The process, for me, was the same. What I did was I first went to the store that I wanted to transfer to and spoke to the store manager. I wanted to first find out if there was a position for me at the store and if he would accept my transfer. Once I got his approval, I went back to my store, got the approval of my then-current store manager, and from there, the co-manager over HR in the store that I wanted to transfer to handled things. Then, I did it all over again as a full timer and moved on to another store.

I had the benefit though of knowing co-managers at these stores and had a really positive working relationship with them, so in both instances when I transferred, the co-managers already wanted me there so I guess you can say I had a bit of an advantage and they were willing to do what needed to be done to make the transfers happen. This is why it's a good idea to have a positive work relationship with co-managers, because you never know when you might need their help.

Above all else, you have to get both your current store manager and the store manager at the store you want to transfer to to okay the transfer. This process may vary by location, though.

It's very easy to transfer stores.  Just call the store you want to transfer to first.  If you can't get a full time position find a part time position that still guarantees enough hours to break even for you.  Call or stop into the store you wish to transfer to.  Get their attention first as the transfer will go much easier.  Then tell your store manager you are transferring.  If you manager refuses due to short staffing then contact your union rep.  It is illegal to withhold your wishes due to short staffing.  I've seen a lot of coworkers forgo their desired quitting date because the manager(s) keep pushing them to stay due to short staffing.  Then one day they walk because they're over stressed.
