Cashiering Questions
Permalink

Titled Cashiering questions but most will probably end up being about ring tender. Decided to consult the internet since I get the sense that my supervisor/boss doesn't actually know what ring tender is. Other questions I've asked but have gotten mixed/unclear answers. Or I just haven't asked. my bad

For reference if necessary my store has the keyboard-type things with all the buttons and a monitor for showing scanned items and prices. We have maybe 3 cashiers in the 90-100 range and everyone else generally 85 and below (that's me),

Non-Ring Tender:

1) Do Fuel Points still count for WIC transactions?

2) How do you void weighted items? void-enter and void-scan both bring up that it doesn't match, presumably due to weight differences.

3) My store has us stay signed on to registers even if we aren't using them to help with the quevision thing. How does this help? (I've just been told it's how fast people get through the store/checkout) Not super important but I'm curious

4) Is having to scan produce just due to possible errors with typing in the wrong produce? organic vs non organic, apples all looking the same, etc.

5) Is there any way to switch to WIC if I failed to press it before hand? After forgetting so many times and having to restart I probably own't even again, but you never know.

Ring Tender:

I'm at 0.85 and looking to consistently stay at 0.9 and eventually reach the desired 0.95

1) Scouring the internet says to stay on total when waiting for whatever reason. I feel like this still runs on tender time though and was wondering if there really is any difference between staying on total or immediately going to eft

2) What ways do you make yourself look busy while the customer slowly unloads their cart so you don't catch up to them while they unload?

3) Does anyone know the time values for scanning items vs with the gun? Typing produce vs scanning (w/ or w/out gun) and if everything has the same value (from soda cases to kool-aid packets)? All I've seen is the scan gun gives 0.4 seconds

4) Does the express lane have different values or is people's general disposition to have their card out and payment ready supposed to even out bagging?

I'm sure I have tons more questions but I'm blanking right now. I'll update this post with them as they come up

Wasn't sure if this forum is even active enough, but thought I'd ask anyways. Thanks!

non ring tender answers;

1) yes

2) not sure, i do a certain way but im pretty sure not the correct way so i'm not gonna say

3) que vision is garbage, but staying signed it tricks the system to thinking theres another cashier there, so don't need to open another lane. but after 5 mins it doesnt matter anyways

4) yes

5) nope :/

ring tender answers

1) i dont think it matters, i just auto press eft

2) bag their items i guess

3) not sure

4) it has different values but not sure exactly how it works

Scanning with Scale and Gun is the same, the only difference is keying vs scanning.

All weight items have a Tare, which represents the weight of the packaging. When scanning or weighing an items the system takes off .01 from the scale value. If your unable to voids because of a weird difference, reset the scale to 0.00 and then look at the receipt for the weight. After finding the item weight, scan or key the PLU and they the weight in with an added .01 and the items should void.

I think your overthinking the Ring Tender Score, the biggest thing you can do it simple start and finish as soon as possible. While I do not have confirmation, you should prompt customers when paying with CC/Debit with Pin Pad prompts. Think of it as "If the Receipt didn't print your still getting times".......... As long as your scanning effectively and taking payment that is all you can do, check your "NoSale96SignOn" for IPM and get IPM as high as possible.

Thank you both for the replies!

Most of this stuff was my curiosity, but I'll definitely try adding 0.01 when manually entering weight to void. As far as ring tender goes, I can see myself getting faster with more time which will definitely help my ring tender. I'm mostly just annoyed with the lack of knowledge about how ring tender actually works (or misinformation - many members of my store believe securing the terminal pauses the timer). If I knew more of the mechanics behind it I feel like that would also help improve my ring tender even more

1)  Yes fuel points can be used on wic checks.  They just don't have to pay for them.  The government is basically giving them free gas points.

2)  Simple answer:  If you a) scanned the barcode, just scan it again, reference the weight and add 0.01.  If the sticker milti scanned, and you're not too far into the order just void it and start over.  Same basic idea if you entered the ten key code.  Void enter if it lets you to quick remove it.

3)  That is true.  According to self check rules:  A) You can not cashier in a check stand due to customer service.  B) You're tethered to the self check area.  I.e. you can not wonder from it.  Even to go bag, chat or assist a customer on an isle.  For customer service.  D)  Signing into another check stand is technically not allowed.  If a customer needs their ordered transferred to the monitor and you're signed into a register you're at a stale mate and have a customer service issue.  E)  You're technically not even allowed to use the remote control according to self check rules.  Why?  Close, customer service interaction.  Up close and personal.  This sure pisses a lot of customers off as they come here to avoid confrontation.

4)  If your store is good about it you should be able to scan produce.  The last store I operated at was terrible at allowing their produce to scan.  The highest individual's percentage was like 45%.  My current store is at 82%.

5)  No.  You have to void the order and start all over again.

1)  Not sure the answer.  Was never explained the rules.  I do know if I'm not needed I sign out as wait times slow your numbers down.

2)  If the customer is willing to unload the basket I let them.  The company needs to design check stands to force the customers to unload.  Enough of the company designing stupid ways for us to injure our selves.

3)  Scanning with the gun is quicker though you do have to be aware of tinnitus.

4)  An express lane is technically designed to move small orders through quickly.  It's up to the cashier to more quickly push a slower customer starved for attention.  I view it as we get paid for the hour.  Just means less work for me.

FYI....the more you know ...doesn't help you with this company!!  You can explain how something works and then they will change the settings to justify whatever end result they want!  They added Roundy KMA and Clicklist.....and somehow Cashier hours and EVERYONES hours were cut.  Being a cashier became easier.......was the justification and all the NEW HIRES are more productive ...HA  This is why no store makes Ring Tender and most stores are told they only need 2-4 cashiers at a time.

Signing onto the register makes the monitors look pretty and happy and make you feel good but if actual customers aren't going through that other lane you're not gaining anything.

You'll still be out of queue which means more than 1 customer checking out and 1 waiting behind them.  The reports are determined by the heat sensors overhead not being signed in or off.

Do not secure your register in the middle of an order because your ring tender will be penalized. Before the company caught on, cashier used to use that to improve their ring tender by stopping the clock.  When they saw what was going on they decided to penalize those who did it.
