Notice on time clock said this was starting in January-if we wanted a paper check it would be mailed to our house and Kroger would not issue pay advances for late/misdirected checks. They said that they could not guarantee we would get our check on Friday if we chose to have it mailed. I don't like the idea of my employer having access to my checking account. Will we get a copy of our checks if we take direct deposit? What is Kroger's thinking in all this? They are acting as if it is a benefit to us-it isn't!!! Is this happening in your region too?
"Will we get a copy of our checks if we take direct deposit?"
Pay stubs are accessible from ExpressHR and can be printed from there (or saved as PDF as long as you're on a reasonably modern system with print-to-PDF)
I personally prefer direct deposit to a paper check as I don't have to pick the damn thing up from the service desk and then deposit it, it hits my bank account ~1:30 AM Thursday morning and I'm good. No having to come into work on payday if it's my day off. No risk of lost checks (it's happened at my store). Just a weekly ACH deposit.

RE: Now we are being foreced to take direct deposit or something called a "Universal Cash Card"
Paper checks are going away for us, period. Our store's ASP the other day was saying how paper checks cost the company a lot of money every year, so employees must now either use Direct Deposit or be paid with some sort of card. I wasn't really listening because I've used Direct Deposit for years now, but yeah, here in Southwest Division, no more paper checks very, very soon.
Yea, my DH was yapping about this weeks ago in regards to direct deposit and then the bakery back up manager did the same thing. Cause instead of relaying the full email of info, the DH just told us that folks that pick up their checks won't be getting them any more. When in reality they would be mailed to your house. I haven't heard about the universal card thing though. But yea I've had direct deposit ever since I started working. So no real big deal to me. Although it was kind of funny that our deli back up(the one that came over with us from our previous location) still picked up her checks at the service desk, and I think was about the only person from our department that was affected by it.
