We're undergoing a remodel / conversion right now, and the Company I guess hired three cleaning people specifically for the tasks of maintaining the store during the remodel process (doors / windows, coolers / freezers / bunkers / trash in store / depts, mop / sweep, deep cleaning etc.) The ladies are pleasant to see and even if one doesn't speak English at times, we're willing to give em a hand whenever needed (like helping em run garbage when at the compactor so it's not all on one of them to toss the heavier stuff because we all know how the Depts can be (>50 lbs trash in one bag.)
I'm a UC under Roundys (but krog recently "reclassified" us as CC, which makes it interesting, but in ExpressHR, I am still listed as Utility / Store Clerk. So I don't know but whatev.) It's honestly helpful to have them there during the day n night as they really take the workload off of us and let us focus on the more intricate things we need to do (our under 18 UCs can really be half assed at times even though I try to drill my night closing routines into them if they have to do store maintenance. It doesn't help though that half our dept are minors and there's only a few people, myself included, who are pretty much the "senior" UCs who are the go-to's for things because we are over 18 and we do our jobs. Heck I am usually a selected FE Team Member to assist CSR / FES with ensuring that Front End procedures are carried out if we get bad weather / power failure. I also know that between me n another UC I work with, we two are pretty much the only ones to carry / have a box cutter on our person since we do paper n plastic refills alot. I use it also when tearing open the new pallets of paper n plastic and I keep that area of backroom organized, while keeping aware of when we might need a refill / order of more. Some people say I should be paid more with how much i do for my job, but to me, I'd rather do my job as a professional should rather then doing it like a turtle. Whether bagging / carry out, on carts, doing store maintenance / customer assistance, stacking and organizing pallet stacks in back, or whatever I am assigned or doing on my own at the time, I do it with a smile because hey we may low right now on the totem pole, but that doesn't mean we are not a crucial resource for the store. My former Night Lead even trained me on bailing so we'd have another person to be able to do it.
Liquor damages are the same, only those above 18 in Utility may handle liquor go backs to the cage in back. If under 18, you touch no liquor damages period.

I wonder. We only have 2 cleaners. They run the big floor cleaner and buffer at night. Not aware of any Utility clerks.
When there is a spill, normally they call it on the PA and one of the CCs cleans it up. All CCs take turns to run the carts from the parking lot and do the hourly sweeps of the floor. My store is not small, so... How come we don't have UCs?
See in my store, we have CCs and UCs. The UC is part of the front end department. I get called to bag and pull carts all the time, but I have my own station in the back room and a specialized cart for all my junk. Mine is also a "Signature" store and a "show" store, so maybe it's more fancy than other stores.

I spare you the horrors of an unclean bathroom. You do not want to know the things I've seen.
The separate utility clerk thing may be going away. I dont know why. It makes things easier to separate those who just clean from those who do other tasks. Not everybody gets carts.
No utility clerks at my store, only courtesy clerks who assume the duty of a utility clerk.
Same here. Unfortunately, the store has in the past month, lost two of the best courtesy clerks. They both could not take the store's atmosphere anymore after working for years and years. Last year, we had one of our best die of pneumonia at the age of 62, the pressure shifted to about four clerks. Two have left. We are down to two decent courtesy clerks. There is a really good one who only works on Tuesdays for four hours, it is unfortunate due to his age (70s) that he can not put out more hours as he always does his work. We have one clerk that was constantly disciplined by the customer service people for insubordination, now, at night, they basically can not afford to send him home anymore due to us not having staff. He gets yelled at a lot still, but never sent home.
