How much are union dues? Trying to decide if it's worth taking the job.

Don't know about your store, but here it is 7.00 per paycheck (per week). So basically about 1 dollar a day, $364 dollars a year.

Is it worth it? In my opinion, NO.

The union is next to worthless, and is mostly good for helping the lazy workers (with poor work ethics) keep their Kroger jobs. I know of people at Kroger who should have been fired years or even decades ago, but somehow hung on because the union would back them up. Meanwhile, truly good workers are not appreciated.

It is $500/yr for me. $9 every check. Is it worth it? Absolutely. The union definitely has flaws, like he said, and they defend lazy people too, but if they defend lazy people well, why can't they defend you, a good worker, any less? The union is just a backup plan. You never know when you might need it, but when you do, it' comes in handy, especially against unfair and cruel management. You can also choose to not be in the union. Up to you.

In some states, it is mandatory to join the union.  I think California is one of those states.

Around here, it's an hour's wage every week. For me, that's $720 a year.

No way would I pay those worthless bastards that much.

The problem is that if you have a problem, the union will just tell you you to quit so you don't interrupt their chair-spinning and naptime (and so you can't get unemployment).

The other problem is that you might make more money at Wal-Mart anyways.

UFCW Local 1000 seems to be making the case that the $8 or $12 a week is not worth it.  The Prez pays himself $267,000 to $299,000 out of our dues.  He employs his wife as office manager at a cool $95,000.  Little Bro is a business agent who is not required to return calls--much less, emails--from members.

It's supposed to be OUR union, not the Burris Family Employment Agency.

Good workers aren't the ones that need defending.

When you have lazy salaried managers who pawn off their work on good workers, then lie and say that the reason said good workers didn't get their own tasks done is from their own refusal to do it, yes, good workers do need defending.

When an ADH was power-tripping in front of her son and making a threat to write me up over nonsense, I made damn sure I had my union rep's contact info on hand.
