I had a situation like that once. A manager told them to use the coinstar machine instead, and then come back and pay.
Why? Money is money no matter what denomination it is. It costs money to use the Coinstar machine. Why would someone want to pay more for their groceries? The manager was in the wrong. I would have left and then filed a complaint.
To add to my topic.. as the sco.. it's none of my business how many COINS she pays with..and I would be out of line to tell her to stop..its cash, right, she's free to use as many COINS as she deems necssary.. to pay Her bill..
Here's a strange one..a customer had a $30 order at u scan and tried paying with pennies until it locked up..
..should the sco attendant tell her she can't pay with pennies or let her carry on..what would you do..?
Well if the pennies locked up because she was trying to pay the whole bill with pennies, then that is her answer right there. If you don't feel comfortable saying anything then you can have the floor supervisor do it. I prefer customers take large amounts of change to uscan not cashiers. It holds up the line unnecessarily and quite frankly is rude. Customers should either put excessive change in uscan or like the post above stated, to a coinstar. Using coinstar is the most appropriate, that is what it is there for.
