Kroger's Brand Identity
Permalink

I was watching some spectacular commercials from international grocery chains and it made me realize how awful Kroger and its brands look in comparison. Hopefully someone from Kroger Marketing sees this and decides to *cough* STOP MAKING ANNOYING TRASH COMMERCIALS *cough*

Check out this heart-warming one from German Chain Edeka:

Or them playing "Jingle Bells" on the cash registers:

This is a good one from British chain Tesco:

This one from Aldi:

Even this one from German chain Lidl which is now opening stores in the US:

Or this recruiting commercial for Lidl (I would definitely work there over King's any day if they had them here):

This is a really chilling one from British chain Sainsbury's:

NOW: Compare to this King Soopers commercial that was probably thrown together in an afternoon:

Or this entirely forgettable (and annoying) King Soopers Clicklist ad:

And this (not so) wonderful Kroger Christmas commercial:

I also notice the Uniforms look much more professional and stylish from these chains.

Exhibit A: Lidl

Exhibit B: Edeka

Now compare to the oh-so-professional and stylish (not) Kroger Uniform:

SO - Any Kroger execs that may be lurking: I would be happy to help make Kroger's brand a little less trash *wink wink* and accept a yearly salary *wink wink*. Or you could just make the marketing execs I'm sure you pay a lot of $$ do a little better job.

All in all, these new German chains that are coming into the US are much more stylish, cheap, and modern than Kroger. Kroger is going to get eaten up and I can't say I will be crying a deep blue river. I wish that Kroger/King's/Smiths/etc had a brand I could take pride in. I want to be proud of the place I work and for people to respect/like the place I work. Anybody else share these sentiments?

Have you ever shopped at Aldi? Tiny store, stuff thrown on shelves still in the boxes, messy,  very few name brands, just cheap unknown brands coming from God knows where. Customer service is non existent, gotta bag your own stuff, in your own bags, but prices are still not that much cheaper than Kroger, especially for what you are getting. People who shop there are stupid. Only good thing is they let their cashiers sit down while working, but even then the cashiers are rude. Only thing I would buy from there was their frozen pizza when it was on sale really cheap, I tried their other stuff, totally not worth going back for.

That lidi uniform looks like a soccer uniform. Do they play soccer while they work? Do they have a soccer franchise?

And I sure as hell don't want to have to wear a dress shirt and apron everyday as a uniform, how stuffy, and having to get that dry cleaned, employees don't get paid enough for that.

I like that Kroger has gone more casual with uniforms, I doubt customers care. Only people who should be dressed up is management. I hate when store managers dress like employees, you can't distinguish them from hourly employees and that is unprofessional.

Kroger could start making commercials like that but it would actually hurt the brand. Kroger's reputation is pretty stable right now and if Kroger started running more "upscale" ads that targeted a specific audience, like white old money upper class, or leftists democrats, or said they support kneeling during the anthem, Kroger would tarnish the brand forever. Kroger plays it pretty safe in all honesty which is a good thing as it keeps stores in a lot of diverse areas open. Everyone shops at Kroger, it's the largest chain in the US. A Kroger ad directed in the same format as Lidl or Whole Foods wouldn't work - poor people shop and work at Kroger.

As for uniforms, one is a stock picture and the other is that of a group of employees with uniforms that obviously show age.

Yes, I have shopped at Aldi and I agree it is quite "ghetto" per se. I am focusing on the brand here. While we love our comfy blue polos, they don't look all that great

Interesting! I suppose Kroger's neither here nor there branding does make it accessible to everyone. Even Walmart's commercials are better, though, and they don't have any trouble attracting a certain crowd

Kroger hasn't had a good advertising campaign since the "Let's Go Krogering" jingle.  They used to do a catchy commercial to the tune of "The Twelve Days of Christmas" during the Christmas season too.
