We had a shoplifter take a bunch of stuff tonight, according to my manager. She ends up losing her balance chasing the guy down. She seemed upset that nobody helped. I was helping a customer load her stuff into a riding cart after hers died. Are we, as employees, supposed to stop shoplifters? I thought we were supposed to just call the cops, plus am I just supposed to tell the customer to deal with her groceries while my manager and I go play Kroger PD?
If a person is desperate enough to steal groceries, they are desperate enough to shoot someone.
I will make scammers and suspected shop lifters uncomfortable but I won't chase anyone down or accuse anyone.
The store managers can chase anyone they want. They might be trained similar to loss prevention. But, regular employees should not put themselves in harms way.
About 15 years ago, a LP guy from kmart was fatally ran over while chasing after crack heads stealing CDs.
I was under the impression that an employee could NOT go after a shoplifter-that it was management's job to handle the situation. So your manager asking an employee to help apprehend a shoplifter may be against company policy
I once saw an employee chase down a shop lifter and get stuck in the throat with a box cutter. Missed his jugular artery by a half centimeter. That forever more sealed my position on stopping shop lifters.
We've been told more than once that employees are not to confront shoplifters. If you see someone shoplifting, you are to notify management or loss prevention (LP).
Out by me, hell no. I've interfered / been "nosy" and hovering nearby so they see me / and or identified a few, but no, we as hourly are to not do anything to confront them. Report to your supervisor or manager / LP immediately and try to keep eyes on them or give as best a description as you can and let management / LP handle it

They don't pay me enough to stop shoplifters. Getting shot, stabbed, over a bag of chips or beer is NOT worth it. Nor is being sued by said shoplifter after you beat their ass for swinging o n you first
