What the 7 days...O_O
Permalink

Okay, I know some of my fellow associates have mentioned working 6 or 8 days in a row of late and folks getting 3 days off. None of which applied to me. Til I just looked at the rest of this week's schedule combined with next week's on the  greatpeople website. And dude, I think I've been hit with this new version of scheduling now as well.

As it stands I'll be working for 7 days straight and no off time til next Thurs. thru Saturday. Which never hurts to make a pretty penny. And I know we are shorter staffed in the bakery these days. But dude what is up with so many days scheduled in a row like that? Heck, I know I typically gripped about not having two days off together before. And that when I did get days off they would be at the very start and very end of the week. But no days off for 7 or more is a wee bit much.

Anybody else experiencing this during or after the holiday season? I thought they were supposed to be cutting back hours or something after the holidays are over. Is it a new thing they are trying out per divisions or something?

Are you seriously complaining about having to work seven consecutive days?  Try working nine, ten, eleven, or even twelve days in a row.

That is unfortunate if that is your situation. But still doesn't stop me from wondering what's going on either the way. Nor does it stop how much I'll want to bash in a couple of heads after so many days in either, do to lack of enough people to cover shifts, and for those that are there they are beginning to slack off even more. And as of late I'm expected to turn into super bitch picking up the pieces of everything others are leaving behind.

Just to summarize in a few words.

Your blight is what everyone is experiencing, the company is trying to make things easier but only making things harder. I'm all for working hard, but when you never see a "slow day" or able to accomplish your daily tasks, you kinda do not take any pride in your work. But working 7 days in a row does suck...

Exactly. I'm not opposed to making more cash. Nobody would be. But yea, going back into bakery for consecutive days on end and with the day shift not even willing to take out a good chunk of the cardboard and trash when they are on. And leaving me with 5 or so trays of stuff to ice, more stuff to package and label, along with my other closing stuff.

Add to that the snide notes that the bakers leave all the damn time when you honestly forget to do something. I swear it drives me nuts at times. Thankfully I'm not to the point of having panic attacks like the one college chick. As everyone knows you wigged out so bad one night, from so much pressure she ran off the sales floor and hid in the supply closet crying.

I'm nowhere near that point personally speaking. But dude from that one instance she gets more help in the afternoons. But when I'm on, suddenly nobody is around to even ask if we have more labels for something. Or if we have any more pie boxes anywhere. But they are quick to run by and tell me to hop on this or that customer. Again, I know assisting customers is also part of my job. But truly, I can't fill floor, slice bread, page about a milk delivery, take a cake order, write on a cake, and ice cookies all at the same time(which was nearly the case a little bit before Christmas).

So to say the least, I'm sorry all of us are going through such things. As the stress of it all is definitely not something I'm looking forward to in the next several days. As your right, hard work has nothing on some of these demands half the time.

Tell your DH how you feel about this and let him know that you do NOT want to work so many days in a row. Hopefully he/she will fix it once you make them aware of it. Sometimes they do it to their best workers or by accident. If you want to put a permanent fix though, change your availability or start requesting days off. If you are PART TIME, you do not have to have open availability but your hours may be slightly cut.

I wish it were that easy. But I'm full time and it seems like my open availability has been used to cover for everyone else's restrictions. I'd love to change my hours to Sunday through Thursday only. But I'd feel selfish for doing that as so many other people keep cropping up with their own excuses for changing their availability. Rather they have something going on or not.

So I'll suck it up and see how the week after next goes. Kroger sells color re-touch stuff for premature greying right?

Well as long as its graying and not falling out..... hopefully RESTOCK KROGER starts addressing the Elephant in the room! If you don't have long term associates caring because they have been beat down, you can hire all the newbies you want....

Oh I'd definitely be up and out of there if my hair was falling out. This job, is definitely not worth it if it began compromising my health or hair. Was joking on the going grey thing. If anything, I should be able to fit into some skinny jeans from missing dinner a few times during the week, when I close bakery.

But yea, I do agree that something has got to give. Most especially when it seems like bakery can't keep new peeps and the lifers are getting more lippy and snide as the days go by. And at times they try and make me seem like the scape goat with crap others do as well. Just really builds a pressure cooker situation.

You are full time.  You get 2 days off each week?

Under our contract, you are allowed to pick one regular day off a week to be unavailable.  Ask your union rep.

I always thought it was the way things went. Cause even when I was part time I noticed the full-timers, back up managers, and my DH got 2 days off as well. But yea the 3 days off thing was what surprised me when I first heard about others having that going on. But then of course the deli back up manager told me that they start cutting folks hours when folks are caught standing around NOT working as much. Hence they want us to stay busy down there in deli.

But honestly, they have so many people on that it's hard to stay busy down there, if there isn't a bunch of customers or trays to do. And even if you reach for something, half the time they tell the peeps that have been there longer to not do that. So that the new people can learn and do it more on their own. So I don't know if they are cutting hours in Deli and adding more to bakery or what.

Most I've ever worked in a row is 15. Then 11 on two occasions, and I'm sure quite a few 7-8+ days. Loved the checks, hated everything else.

15?! Holy cow. Is your department super small like 4hrrush has mentioned about her's at times? I'd be totally burnt out.

A grocery department with two full-time night stockers and a rotating list of guys in 15-30 hour range. Five guys to stock a truck if lucky, usually 3-4, sometimes 2. Last year when this happened the situation was out of control.,

I would imagine that would have to be out of control. That is totally something else.
