help me get my cashier time up!

i will share some things i have been trying and ask if they work. i am a cashier in arkansas and i've been bagging since august and checking since, idk, october maybe. only recently started checking nearly all the time since a couple girls got fired for coupon fraud. anyway

when there is any delay at all, i hit the lock drawer button. is this right to do?

i made my password '3' so signing on is quick. i have also heard hitting total stops your time. i have heard locking drawer stops time. i want to catch up to the currently fastest cashier by appearances who remains around 30 items per minute. sometimes higher sometimes lower. one day she started and had 40 items but we will call that a fluke

i tried watching her and she doesn't even seem to go that fast

i close the drawer immediately and re-open for any cash exchange. i ask for the person's kroger card first thing, and i move the bottom up onto the little side surface. actually, there's not a lot special i do, like i just try to scan without looking and i'm about 24 items per minute. that is a jump from last week and the week before, etc.; getting comfortable. is it really just 'keep practicing and you will get better' or is there something i'm missing

on a side note, i tell almost every single customer about the survey. i tell them where my name goes if they take it and highlight those parts of the receipt. i've received a few kroger bucks for getting highly satisfied surveys. i do realize i'm kind of robotic and perhaps aggressive about the survey; i don't care if the customer is ready to go, if there's any chance they will take that survey and mention me i figure it's worth a few seconds, since i'm stuck at work anyway

Honest question, why care about ring tender so much? I mean sure try not to be the slowest one there, but Kroger can't penalize you in any way for not going at a certain speed*, and unless they still give out gift cards for that at your store, I just wouldn't bother and focus on the customer instead.

May not apply if you're in a non-union store, or still in your 90-day probationary period.

i'm not worried about a penalty, i'm already faster than most of or at least half of the other cashiers. i don't have much to say to the customer; i don't believe in small talk much, and i don't think that is actually necessary for customer service. i'm not rude or trying to rush them out of the door. speed is also praised by customers

they probably don't give out gift cards right now, but they used to and they might again, just like they recently started up the associate recognition for surveys. they're giving safety bucks for logging sweeps (the most or specific order)

it is just like going to the gym and getting your reps/weight up. you could call it ego

when i said i wasn't rude earlier i think there have been a few customers (of many) who got under my skin especially being a deliberate ass-bag. but for the most part i am friendly and accommodating because that's how i am anyway although i value alone time more
