Customer complained to store manager that I was watching him on Uscan
Permalink

In the past, I've gotten a few customers who made remarks that they don't like me standing there while they're checking out on Uscan. Even though, me standing there is my job.

But today, this guy is different. This guy, comes up to me, and asks me why I was standing there next to him, "the whole time." I'm thinking, oh this must be someone I failed to notify that there was an open Uscan while he was standing waiting in line. Nope. Next sentence out of his mouth, clued me in as to what this guy is on about.

Let me just be clear. Before this moment, I had never even seen that guy before. And he was wearing a very distinct blue jacket. And I honestly do not even remember him coming through my Uscan. I guess it was just that busy.

So I really did not even know what this guy was talking about, as I told him. He continues on trying to argue with me, insisting that I was profiling him and making him uncomfortable by standing there. I respond, "I don't know what you're talking about, I was just doing my job." He asks me what my job is. I respond that my job is to help the customers. He doesn't like that response and continues arguing. At that point I just walk away and go help a customer that needed my help.

He goes over to the service desk, complains to an ACSM and demands to speak to a manager. A co-manager comes over and talks to him. Four minutes, he was there, complaining about me "watching" him.

Okay...

In your store your always going to get that! But there will be times you NEED to watch people too! Depending on the day and my mood, I would have told the dude, I'm helping and keeping an eye out for anything needing assistance before "Help is on the way".

If anything, just ask the CSM/ACSM or Co-Manager what they would like you to do? LEAD or just listen for "Help is on the way"? But I learned always walking around, pacing, picking up stuff, and cleaning up randomly all around the SCO kept the questionable customers from doing stuff. When they don't know where your at and your always moving around, its harder for them to feel safe trying to do stuff.

Oh, I do that 100% of the time. I rarely stand in one spot for more than 30 seconds. I'm all over the place picking up garbage, putting baskets back, putting items back in nearby aisles, putting stray bags back on the bag racks. It's actually quite a job helping the customers AND keeping the Uscans nice and tidy. Especially when busy. Every other cashier that does Uscan, it's always trashed, but when I do it, nice and clean.

Now that I think about it, there was a moment when I was making a "cash only" sign to put on a closed Uscan. And I was standing directly in front of the Uscan's scanner and screen. Maybe he must have been the guy next to me.

I assume since the co-manager didn't come and talk to me that they must have shrugged him off.

Eh.  Three possibilities.

1.  He was actually trying to steal and was pissed off that you were doing your job.

2.  Some people see discrimination in every possible situation, regardless of reality.

3.  Both.

If he didn't go complain at the desk, I would suspect that he might also have been providing a distraction for his thieving buddy on the machine behind you.  Or maybe it was one of the above possibilities and he was also trying to get you in trouble, and maybe to get you to just leave him alone the next time he comes through.

Give him the third degree the next you see him.   **** him.  That guy is a jerk at best.  Make him avoid you instead.

when I worked SCO, before the conversion to the new IBM/Tosbiba interface a lady came to U-scan and started ringing a big cart of groceries at a robot with 2 bag racks and no carasuel or self. I caught her making mistakes, and then attempting to rip us off twice. I offered to assist her, as thats nicer than accusing her of ripping us off. She said I dont need your help. Of course all of these are red flags so I watched her like a hawk. She turned to me and said are you going to stand there and watch me ring up my order? I just replied with yep thats my job. I told my assistant store director and before I finished the story he said did you tell her thats you job with a laugh.

Im a gay man and a young woman accused me of looking at her creepily in a sexual manner like she didnt go to management, I wasnt even looking at her, I was actually looking at something going on that was in the same direction as her. Whats funny is when she said something to me one of the girl baggers walked by and said.... you know hes gay, right? She was embarrassed and apologized. I felt bad she was uncomfortable. Still her perception wasnt reality
