Subject: OUR PURPOSE AND PROMISE

Good afternoon[,] everybody! With our district kickoff only a few weeks away, I would like to share with you a little bit of the foundation of what you will be hearing over the next 2-3 weeks.

What is OUR PURPOSE?

Kroger is trying to become a Purpose-Driven Company such as Disney, Nike, Starbucks. Having a purpose is the reason you exist. We want our customers to know what we STAND for and that is TO FEED THE HUMAN SPIRIT.  Purpose-driven companies have more LOYAL CUSTOMERS & ASSOCIATES, which, in the end, will help us achieve the business results we need.

How are we going to do this?

By delivering on OUR PROMISE and its 4 Elements:

·         Everyone Friendly and Caring : We all need to treat each other as friends and guests. Associates and customers

·         Everything Fresh: This is not only fresh products but also includes all are 5 senses. Sight.  How do your foyers look? Parking lot? Associates uniforms. Smells inside the stores ( bacon, bread, bathrooms) Sounds, what PAs are going on inside the store? Are they selling ones, or are they ones that get excessive? Taste (are we offering samples (deli, produce, meat). Touch, bloody packaging in meat, a fresh wet rack.  All these impact fresh.

·         Uplift Everyway: By now, we all should be having our huddles with the new format. The purpose of the huddle is to have us feeling good, while also being impactful . Metrics are important, but they are to be mentioned in a different environment around the right cast. We will be seeing different communication. More uplifting communication whether they are in updates, emails, or just how we walk stores and converse with each other.

·         Improve Everyday: Improve yourself, your department, or your store each and every day. Dont focus on the METRIC, but are the right behaviors in place to be successful[?]

Our Promise will help us live out OUR PURPOSE, creating a place where our associates love to work and our customers love to shop.

This will be an exciting Journey for us all. A huge culture change that will keep us in business for the next 135 years. If you have any questions, please dont hesitate to ask. Have a great day! Thanks!

Thanks,

...

| Our Promise Facilitator

Love how two of the three companies Kroger's trying to emulate are notorious for crappy labor conditions.

Kroger sweatshops here we come!

That's strange. I always thought  Kroger's real "OUR PURPOSE" was to make tons of money  ???????????????????

Sorry.........I was misinformed.

It's the same thing we're doing day after day.  They always have to come up with a new name for it and introduce new gimmicks and such that never work. Same old horse crud from a bear's hind end.

This. They're literally doing the same BS they've done in the past, but with new names. Just like anything else the company has pushed. Only difference is we're having to deal with more paperwork and time-wasting crap that nobody gives a damn about. If I have to guess, huddles will be gone within 6-8 months. Ain't nobody got time for uplift stories either.

It's no different than backroom/stocking processes that they "change" but it's back-and-forth the same methods with new cutsy names.

I asked my manager wtf does "Feed the human spirit" even mean? It sounds like corporate jargon that doesn't really mean anything.

He laughed and said that's basically what it is.

I love when even managers admit that it's nonsense

It's basically the 4 keys/Fresh and friendly repackaged into a new combination of focus-grouped jargon.

Sure is some nice-sounding happy talk.  If only the company meant it.

So, the "Our-Promise Facilitator" is a full-time job?

I'm still not sure what they do, but they promoted all the coordinators to this position and promoted new people to coordinators. It just seems like more chief being created with lesser and lesser indians...

That's just another eff you to us, ordinary working folk. Just adding insult to injury.

"Are you the only one in your department today, when there should have been 2? That's perfectly alright. Just don't forget to smile and be happy."

Uplift every way, my ass. lol

If the company truly cared, why do we focus so much on looking perfect for store walks? Let them see the shape the stores are really in. But instead, i get answers like "corporate doesn't care how understaffed you are, they don't see that as an excuse".

Somebodys clearly just trying to brown nose to someone higher than them or justify their own paycheck. Gotta keep the suits in the job, ya know. biggrin Cant have the enployees thinking we WANT them to kill themselves. Its just an excuse to say that if youre not happy enough, management can get mad at you now for not staying happy to help your coworkers.

oh, trust me. This has already come down on me for not being happy enough for morning shifters.

I believe it.  And how much you wanna bet that those "uplifting stories" come from management or corporate ACTING like they came from employees?

Why not? That's the only reason I go to huddles.

Same here!  Especially since our store manager likes to give out the good stuff.

We barely have huddles anymore. Nobody has the freaking time for that...

My store manager is actually doing them now more than he ever did before. Before we would go a week without one and now we have one almost every day.

Might as well not even bother to have any. It's not like anything is accomplished by having them. All the store manager/co-managers do is parrot the talking points that get sent to them via e-mail/text message or over the phone from coordinators and district managers. Most employees just stand there and put on a show by nodding because they know there is no point voicing any real concerns or bringing up any actual problems.

Huddles are absolutely, positively pointless and it's just one of many tactics employed by the empty suits that run Kroger to make it look like the company values communication and employee input.

No uplift here. Still the customary morning beat-downs.

"Row faster, slaves!"

(Y'all feelin' uplifted yet?)
