Good Manager? Good employee?

In your honest opinion, tell me what you like to see in a manager. If youre a manager, what traits do you like to see in an employee? As an employee, what shortcomings have you overlooked in your boss and for what reasons? Managers, what shortcomings have you overlooked in your employees, and why?

Im honestly just curious. I like to see others insight. If you can, go beyond, not being an asshat, or they show up.

If you want to vent about a ****ty boss or ****ty employee, thats fine, too.

My idea of a good manager is not having a POS bitch treating her deli associates like garbage and understaffing us like crazy but expecting us not to get overtime. Im not overlooking it our union reps are ****ing useless.

As an employee I like to see a manager who will tell you like it is. I have more respect for managers who do their jobs and make others do theirs. I like managers who help out, give advice, and willing to teach.

The short comings I over-look are favoritism, not knowing how a department is run (but telling you how to run it), and moodiness on busy days!

Same as the above poster!

My favorite manager (thankfully he's the head manager) used to work in my department, so he knows how things are run, and when an issue is minor and can be overlooked, and when it can't. He isn't afraid to ask me tough questions if he feels they're warranted, but at the same time, he trusts the CSM to know and do his job, so he doesn't micromanage. He respects his employees, never asks us to do anything off the clock, praises us in public and (constructively) criticizes us in private.

My least favorite manager makes the department do pointless tasks when lines are backed up, asks us dumb questions which shows he barely knows what he means, and loves loves loves to micromanage the heck out of departments. He does everything "by the book", whether or not "the book" makes an iota of sense. And it's a shame because I'd like him as a coworker or a person, but as a leader he kinda sucks.

My least favorite kind of managers are the drunks and lazy ones.

To me, the good managers recognize the good employees and trust them and leave them alone to do their jobs. The bad ones micromanage and show favoritism to the store rats and kiss asses.

I like managers who are fact-based, upfront, honest, defends the store level employee, and active. Like. **** is the way it is. Period. Its out of our control. This is your job. What are you going to do to help get this **** to work? **** the noise, I want to know what priorities are for you. I want humans who can admit their wrong and defend hard workers. Alas, thats not what kroger wants. Hard to find that at all. None of my 4 comanagers are this way, though I used to have a couple. Theyve all quit the company and work as high level managers elsewhere. I just want the to come to work and try.

I like my employees to be fact-based, to take care of themselves first, to be upfront and vocal if there are problems that need covered, to be ready to work hard and be adaptable, listen and be ready for a change in plans, and to try leave work on time with everything done. It sounds like a lot, but I dont expect anything of others that I am not myself, and honestly its pretty simple. Come to work and try.
