last night a lady came back in claiming that the fried chicken she bought tasted like sh*t. demanded refunds said she used link card and doesn't live in area because shes on a road trip she can't come back in tomorrow because she be in Ohio then . i'm the only one there and i really sleepy at that point other then my bagger no manager no office person and third shift is really new about 10 mins away from closing. i can't refund a link card. she asks if she can exchange the chicken for food item equaling the amount of the chicken. in my head i think this sounds ok so im like sure. she comes back with 2 bags of kroger chips Oreos and a freeze flavor ice bags. shes like thanks then leaves with stuff leaving the chicken and old receipt for chicken. was i duped? i left a note about the exchange but i have horrible handwriting so they might not read it. can i get in trouble for this and if so how much trouble? also deli chicken 8.99

Sounds like the normal scam.... (They always come in when their is low staffing or hit a new associate)
They are only in town for a short time.... Their grandmother purchased the wrong item....
Doesn't sound like it was a lot, I wouldn't worry.
Even if it's a scam (and likely) we're pretty much encouraged/forced to "make it right" nowadays and for $8.99, no one gives a damn. Hell, we get at least 3-4 a month that say the cash machine took their money (like $5-10) and we just issue them a $5-10 Kroger gift card. However, if the value of her items plus tax was more than the Deli chicken, you should have made her pay the difference. You don't have a night manager working there? Would be a grocery backup working third shift, but that's the person you need to call in situations like this. If he's off, if the Grocery Manager isn't there, then the "third man" or a department lead should have been called. At our store at night either myself (Grocery Manager) or Night Lead/Backup works, plus usually the Frozen Lead, so there's always some kind of leader in our store until the store closes.
