Can you be required to stay more than 8 hrs?

According to my contract, I don't think so, unless you're a department head or backup. Plus working anything more than 8 hours in a day is overtime.

Union or not, get ready for this to become a common expectation----and on part time schedules so there's no OT involved. Plus 12 hr shifts. Plus swing shifts. This country is fast moving back to slave conditions of the early 20th century.mm

Quite the opposite. I wish I could work 12 hour days but with percent effect and OT being drilled that's not happening. Company isn't allowing it, and it's unfortunate.

Agreed. I would love a 12 hour day every now and then. Would help with bills.

They can not force you to stay more than 8 hours.  Any hour after hour 8 is considered over time according to contract.  Legally they can not force you to stay after hour 8.  If your department becomes unmanned that's a staffing issue for management.  If it becomes an issue contact your union.  Side departments try to do 15 hour work loads in 8/10 hour shifts.  Most are giving up and stopping at hour 8.  If it gets done great if not then to heck with it.  Don't work your self to death.  Live life and enjoy family.  Life is not the pursuit of money.

Variable by State and contract.

check with your union rep.

(always good advice when you think management is dicking you.)
