I was working yesterday in one of the isles and a guy came up to me with a tablet, I vaguely remembered him from orientation. He told me I didn't sign up for the union and that I was supposed to. I remember during orientation we had a packet of things to sign but they were briefly looked at, but we had to give these forms back - so I didn't have a copy. When it seemed urgent I didn't sign up, I assumed it was mandatory. I asked if I had to sign and said "yes we want you to". I quickly signed, and then he told me I would be charged $8 per month, and I started to feel on edge, he told me it was for benefits but didn't specify even after I asked, he was vague about everything. He quickly left and then I regretted it. I went up to him asking if I could wait a couple days and decide so I can do more research. He basically blew me off and said "Already in the computer, you'll be ok!" And this ******* left. I told my dad about it, he did his own research and he found out you pay WEEKLY not MONTHLY like this guy told me. Today I told my supervisor about it and he immediately took my side and got the union steward at my store to talk with me. The steward was very nice and said he'd do anything he can to try and take this back, so he texted the guy who asked me to sign his tablet.
I just turned 20 and this is my first job, I'm trying to move to a different state this year as well. Is this fraud? I'm not sure whether I need to do more action over the situation. My coworker said Union is corrupt, I'm not okay with my money going into this. I realize now I was naive with the situation, but even if I wanted to join the union, I was very misinformed.
Ah. This prick was slick. It's all in how he phrased it, and you weren't conned, you're of legal age and independent guardianship, and you signed a contract, so you have no law suit. And now you've got the steward involved, and they're supposed to 'get this starightened out'? LOL, let us know how that goes!

If your store is with a union you have to be. Otherwise it can lead you to termination if you don't sign up. Like it or not it has to be. Do not give money to the individual that asks. You send them a check or direct withdrawal is a bit better then you don't have to think about it. Do not just hand an anonymous individual stating blah, blah, blah I'm with the money give me money. That is a scam. Give the money directly to the union. Not the so called individual calming representative. But yes, if you're store is with a union you have to sign up for it or it leads to termination. Or go find another job that doesn't have one. The only positions that are exempt from union are corporate office jobs, and first, second, third management positions. Everyone else is union.

Well, Not exactly. It depends on what state you are working in. If your state is a "RIGHT TO WORK" state, you CANNOT be forced to join the union. If you are unsure about your state, find out if it is a "RIGHT TO WORK STATE". See a list of the 28 states currently with "Right to work" laws, here:
At our store once you hit the 90 day mark, you are part of the Union and must pay your initiation fee and first month. Once you get the packet of Union stuff, there is a withdrawal letter you can fill out and mail in to get your initiation fee back and removed from Union. This is in a right to work state.
