What's the incentive to try?

I am a cashier/ APC, but I work service desk, fuel, and management (desk op), but recently I've been feeling like there's no point in trying hard.

We've had changes to management, and that's a trainwreck. Many other people (Especially the older ones or those who have been here for ~15+ years) don't go above 20 and frequently go slower than that. Now they have also been saying that we should keep the fastest people in the busiest lane and the slowest on U-scan. However, this struck me as an incentive to move slower, not try so hard since U-scan is where everyone is vying to be.

My IPM dropped from ~25-30 to ~17. My service manager said made a comment to the effect of "you're going to bring that up right?" but I am having a hard time understanding why I should. I know what I'm doing and how to be fast, I just don't see a reason to try; if everyone else is putting in the bare minimum, why should I try any harder?

Thoughts? Perspectives?

You shouldnt try harder nor should you make a effort or over work yourself. This place wants you to over work yourself every day for absolute trash pay an hour. Just work at a casual pace and **** what others say. If you notice other people not pulling their weight then in no way shape of form should you work harder to compensate for other employees garbage pace.

Yeah there really isnt much incentive to go above and beyond what you would normally do. You could do that and more and they may still say its not good enough. So yeah just do what you can within your shift and clock out.

I have some great ideas for incentives but theyd NEVER go for it:

OSAT: Store needs to get AND maintain a 95-100 on its score for at least 3 months CONSECUATIVLY. once that is met, a NICE store bbq with the GOOD MEAT can be done. NOT that cheap hamburger and hot dog. Im talking Prime Rib or some other GOOD steak.

Employees who show up positive on OSAT, has their name put into a kitty. At the end of the month one name is pulled from the kitty and said employee gets lunch on the store. Other names left over get a $10.00 gift card

Your ideas sound good, except I have to make these comments:

1) You mean using the OSAT system as it is set up now? No store will EVER get a score of 90 to 100 unless there is some serious cheating going on somewhere.

The OSAT as it is now is totally disfunctional, totally worthless, and skews every store in a very negative direction no matter how hard we try.  Say, for instance, 100% of the customers are happy with their shopping experience, and pick "SATISFIED" on the survey. Guess what? The store will still get a big fat "OSAT" (Overall satisfaction) score of ZERO. NOTHING. NADA.   ZILCH!!!     Just because Kroger corp. thinks everybody 'should' pick "Highly Satisfied" or else.

Corporate doesn't seem to get the concept that most people are not like highly impressionable little toddlers who might yell "goodie!!! I am so happy!!!" when you hand them a nice pretty, delicious-looking piece of candy.   Customers are more likely to have their "eyes wide open" and they honestly don't feel all that "WOWED" by their experience when doing their ordinary dull weekly shopping chores.  And honestly, I don't blame them. If shoppers are completely and totally honest, they WILL NOT usually pick the "HIGHLY SATISFIED" choice, because it sounds a little phony and insincere and over-the-top.  "SATISFIED" is good (but is not viewed as "good' by corporate standards at the present time). SO THAT SHOULD CHANGE!!!!

2)  A nice meal with "good" meat is alright. But it has no lasting benefit.  After three or four hours or so, you are hungry again, and we are back to Square One.  No better wages, no more hours, skeleton crew, no real  improvement.   So what's the point of having that?

The 2 best incentives for employees (so they will be more willing to work hard and make sure the customers are happy) are increasing the hours available to each and every department, and raising raises across the board.  (I don't expect that to happen either, unfortunately).

I always thought that the more "valuable" a person is, the more they should be paid. More dept. training, multilingual, and just generally harder work/ better work ethic would lead to raises, advancement, etc. but this company changed that. Now I see that it is only who you know that determines any of that.

You could be fluent in 10 languages and know how to run every dept. but if your direct supervisor doesn't like you, you will still be stuck making minimum as a CC. Likewise you could be the rudest buffoon to walk through the door and you can just brown-nose your way to the top.
Kroger is nothing but politics. Hard work doesn't count for anything.
