Industry Lowest Pay

Kroger starting wage is now beat out by $2-4 an hour by all the other chains here. Our maxed out clerks are about the same rate as their starting. Their cap outs are $4-10 more. So while I'm putting in my applications and throwing away 10 years at this company, I wondered if this is just the my area or not. I used to love this company until they decided to ignore compensation for 5 years straight while they built dozens of new stores in my area that run negative week to week. Every week dozens of nameless managers all making 100k+ wander my store in groups fighting over which standards they are going to enforce this visit. Never producing anything that adds value to the store or helps us sell goods. Just "uplifting" all of the employees by rudely 'correcting' them about what the standards are, 5 minutes another comes through and 'correct' it back the other way. MILLIONS in wasted salaries on these guys. They "check" our store every 3 months despite the normal procedure being to choose a new store every month. Apparently they like marketplace conference rooms for lunch so they only do the same 4 stores over and over.  Ugh I'm so frustrated.

Do I stay for the same wages where I am capped out and work by myself with nowhere near enough time to do what I am supposed to be doing. Or do I go to Walmart making $3 more an hour, where they have a team of 10 people CONDITIONING on black Friday? Kroger wont even pay the labor to have sale items on the shelf, let alone be conditioning on a major sales day. What a sad joke this company has become.

Truth.

Thank you.

I'm applying elsewhere as well. The pay is pretty pathetic for the work they want you to do. sucks you wasted 10 years there hopefully you get something better.

Yep, all the competition in my area pays better, even a popular convienence store chain. It's why last year, multiple divisions had a turnover over 90%. It's amazing that they didn't see this problem coming sooner some... You know... We all ****ing told them

Not sure how many years you need to work to lock in your retirement. Here it's 10. Do that, then get the heck out. Unless you have much less years, then get out now.

I hear from lifers that this used to be a great company, when all those slogans like honesty, integrity... actually meant something. Now, they are just empty words which get repeated by upper management and corp, without understanding or ignoring the true meaning and without going by example.

Back then, employees used to be proud of their work. You can still find some of those, but as they are getting pushed out, new "replacements" don't have same values and standards. And with most of the upper mngrs and corp not caring, those employees that used to care, find it harder to do every day.

Well I agree with everything you said here but the one thing Kroger has going for it, at least in my division, is good insurance at a good price.  What Kroger should consider though is dropping the insurance to the part timers, offer it but don't automatically provide it and then deduct it from pay, and then raise the beginning part time wage up to 9 bucks an hour.
