tonight at around 4am, i stepped outside for a smoke break and saw a little glimmer of light in the corner of my eye. i walked over to the picnic table that is behind our building, and lo and behold, (i assume) a homeless man was sitting there with a little tiny bonfire raging next to him! i wanted to say something, but i was so dumbfounded and scared that i turned around, went back inside, and firmly locked the door behind me. i'm sure people who have been here longer than me have seen much stranger things, but so far for me that takes the cake of weirdness.
You did the right thing. Today's 'homeless' (I'll explain the quotatives in a sec) tend towards violent demands for money, and avoiding them at all costs is the best thing. Now. A word on these people . . .
Although it is true bad things happen that can put anyone out on the street, let's get real. The VAST MAJORITY of these folks are drug/alcohol addicted and very much choose their living circumstances rather than the available social services alternatives, that would have them on steady, disciplined living programs designed to get them back on their feet. They don't want that. They want beer, dope and Marlboros. We have an absolute plague of twenty-somethings in my town, scum bags in perfect physical shape but standing on street corners with PLEASE NEED MONEY FOR FOOD signs all damn day. I see them all the time----going to and coming home from my job.
Raging bonfire? Like an actual fire, pissed off female, or tiny ankle biting dog that thinks its tough.
Ive seen homeless ask for money (normal), ciggs (normal), and i seen some smoke meth/crack in the open, and i even saw a homeless guy get into a NICE car with a friend of his saying that he wont be out tomorrow because he has to go to work. Turned out this guy works at an office. Why he would dress homeless and ask for cash ia beyond me.

No bull**** but that guy who dresses homeless and asks for money probably makes more money in 2 days then you do at a weeks work of kroger time. You really wouldn't believe the money they could rake in on a good day.
