I'm in the Mid-Atlantic division, have heard rumors of an upcoming change in our bookkeeping department where we come in, balance tills, and everything else gets taken care of by the district accountants so the bookkeeper would just work office or whatever the rest of the day. Supposedly they're trialing it at a few stores.
This has been rumors for years. Book keeping is tills SCO and all the services at the service desk. Its nothing that should be taken away from the store level.
When Scan Bag Go first rolled out in my Division the guy from GO mentioned it. It's a real thing. They've been piloting it for a while. Apparently, we just balance the tills, and RASC handles everything else. He called it "Blind Bookkeeping". No news on when it rolls out or anything, but the pilot has been going well over a year, maybe two, so probably soon.
I see a few different issues with this, but in reality most things are automated and in reality some stuff is duplicated with checking items at night. If It wasn't costly, I would expect Cash Recycles at all registers in the future.
It is true. You would just balance tills. You still enter your inventory then carry forward. RASC pull the reports to make sure they match. FYI rasc has been doing this for years. So instead of having people increase or descese money on a line to hide cash shortages. They will cut some time out. They never allowed more then 30 mins to check lines. Bookkeepers should take no more he 2 to 3 hours to finish depending on size of store.

In reality it not going to effect anything position, just eliminate a few hours from the task. In reality its going to allow more theft/shrink and might if anything cause a few positions to investigate shortages at RASC. Currently, RASC just plugs and chugs and might sent an email to the Store or District/Division if a larger discrepancy.
Everything is getting downsized. I heard they're combining the Frozen Department with Nutrition at my store along with grocery being combined with nutrition. More hours means more work. Also front-end is getting downsized to self-checkout lines meaning more unemployed cashiers. All greed is what this company cares about anymore. Trying to be like Wal-Mart instead of being themselves.

Yeah the Elms task for balancing lines is maybe 30 minutes, sometimes less depending on how many lines are balanced in a Division. Not a lot of savings there. RASC only investigates discrepancies $500 or more. So all that work Bookkeepers have been doing for years of correcting and sometimes recovering mistakes is gonna be gone. Catching those mistakes also gave us the opportunity to train a boothie that might have been taught how to do something wrong, or wasn't clear on a procedure. This is only gonna increase shrink and negatively effect the bottom line, but whatever Kroger
If anything bookkeeping has become more streamlined, I always found it interesting it taking some people 4-5 hours to do the bookkeeping task. In reality, the whole bookkeeping process needs to be "refreshed" or "retaught", since a lot of bad habits have been introduced to the newer associates. I know a task that can be cut and in reality no one would notice/care, but a positive wage savings. Weekly loose change in Coinstar, we stopped doing it because it was a waste of time and effort. If one till has a lot of change open, guesstimate/count and move to another till (make sure the cashier knows not to open rolled change). Also, while they say to they are going to eliminate this task, I have a feeling stores will continue to do it.
