Can you be required to work over scheduled 8 hr shift? Our overnight grocery dept head keeps waiting till the last minute to stop and pick up everything. Can they force you to stay because of them waiting till last second

Depends on your contract. In dayton/cinci, they have to ask you to stay over your scheduled shift 2 hours or an hour before hand, in which case you are required to stay an hour but they cant force you to stay more than that.

They tell you otherwise when it comes to night shift, though. The company loves to say we have to stay no matter what until certain things are finished. Its not true. Read the contract, know your rights, stand your ground.

If the night lead is waiting too long to do their job, thats on them. Theyll be the ones that catch the flack for unfinished work and bad productivity anyway. Sounds like youve got a rough situation over there, but its up to your night lead to balance it all and be out without OT. Its not up to you. Good luck.

Now what if you already have plans for that time and they ask you within the time frame stated above? How do you decline to stay the OT without them getting mad?

They are going to get mad anyway, in all honesty.
