Non-Slip Shoe Cover Nonsense
Permalink

So, a little over a month ago a manager walks around and tells us about Kroger's new policy in which we have to wear some non-slip rubber cover over our shoes. We told the manager that we already had non-slip shoes - we bought them when we started because we did what we were told to do - that we needed to wear non-slip shoes. So he had a check a box on the sheet that said we already had non-slip shoes on - he even checked our shoes - and we were told that were basically exempt from having to wear these rubber covers.

Fast forward to now and my co-worker got into trouble for not wearing the non-slip cover. When he explained that he had non-slip shoes already, he was told that that was unacceptable and that he only had two choices: he had to either wear the non-slip rubber cover provided by the company, or purchase non-slip Shoes for Crews through the company program. That Shoes for Crews are the only acceptable non-slip shoes the company allows, otherwise you must wear the non-slip shoe cover.

When I told this incident to another manager, and I kinda laughed, insinuating that the previous manager was just being overzealous, I was shockingly told that no, that was indeed Kroger's policy.

I think this pretty much tells me all I need to know about the integrity of Kroger - as if I needed any more evidence.

TL;DR: Shoes for Crews are the only acceptable non-slip shoes the company allows, otherwise you must wear the non-slip shoe cover.

 Yeah.

Also seems that this policy has been around for over 3 years, according to this thread: https://krogerforum.activeboard.com/t59404759/shoes-for-crews/ Yet i'm just hearing of it, after they told me to have non-slip shoes and I already went out and bought new ones...

Check your shoe store or Wal-Mart for work shoes or boots. For added safety get a pair with steel toes. I use them and they put those others to shame. You probably won't even need the covers.

Did you not read the post? The while point of my post is that we are now being told that he only acceptable shoes are ones from Shoes for Crews. We are not allowed to wear our purchased slip-resistant shoes. I already own two pairs of slip-resistant shoes.

I'm sorry. I missed the part where it was mandatory. My mistake.

Kroger doesn't get any kickbacks if you buy your shoes from somewhere else?

This is OLD OLD OLD news............I was told this about 5 years ago (this pertains ONLY to employees in the Deli, and maybe Meat, as far as I know).  But in the intervening time period I have seen many deli/bakery/meat employees wearing all kinds of shoes that were not Shoes for Crews. They are good "non-slip' shoes bought from other less expensive stores/ companies, in all kinds of unusual colors and styles.

I think it depends on whether a particular store / store manager wants to make a big deal out of it and GO WAY OVERBOARD.   I wouldn't take them serious. I would show them the sales receipt of where I bought MY OWN NON-SKID shoes (there are gobs of decent shoes at many shoe stores and dept stores, you just have to shop around) as well as PERFECTLY GOOD shoes that can be ordered online.  If the management really wanted to raise a stink about it and DEMAND you buy some Shoes for Crews, ask them to reimburse you for the shoes you already bought!!

You can find a dozen other "important" things that the store manager or dept manager will ignore that goes DIRECTLY AGAINST SO-CALLED KROGER OFFICIAL POLICY, and so this is just one of many.  Personally, I have doubts that there ever has been or ever will be an ACTUAL, printed, official, IN-WRITING RULE............I think it is hearsay, or a "GUIDELINE" not a "Written in stone"  requirement.

If you can get ahold of one, check the employee handbook.  The handbooks are awfully hard to come by, though.

Years ago they had those slippers for us. I put them on my feet ONCE and then immediately went out and bought a pair of Shoes for Crews so I would never have to wear them again. They were painful. Also at the end of the day they all go in a communal bucket and have meat and other particles stuck in them and they're disgusting. No one ever cleans them. No thanks.

I haven't used those covers for years, i just wear my own slip resistant shoes and no one's ever said anything. I guess my managers have never worried about it too much, because they've always said as long as it says slip resistant we're good.

I've worked in the deli bakery for 30 years and I have never worn slip-resistant shoes or shoe covers and I have never slipped and fallen as a result.  I have however had so-called safety mats slip on me when I've walked on them and I've slipped on wet spots on the salesfloor.  Perhaps they should make customers wear non-slip shoe covers too. <sarcasm>
