A note to all the managers out there...

If you're reading this and you're a manager, then you're already one step ahead of all the other managers, because after studying this web site a bit, you will already know what the rank-and-file members have gripes about...

This, unfortunately, is for all those other retail managers who need to get a clue really bad and don't have one!

We, the rank-and-file employees know all about the games that are being played...We now know that you've been trained to be *******s from day one...You have been encouraged by your companies to treat people like the mud on your shoes, no matter what the Golden Rule says and you can treat everyone like they're your little pets who will do all of your bidding for you without any consequences suffered by you or any of your ilk...Well, guess what??? We are onto your schemes...We know exactly what you've been taught, what you've been urged to do, and those wonderful bonuses you get for treating people like crap and "motivating" (aka verbally abusing and micromanaging) them...You may not realize this, but we see your kind all too often, and we are the ones who will be around long after you have left for greener pastures elsewhere...You may well be fed up that you didn't get a certain store or a certain promotion...This kind of behavior may even trickle down from the top! You're just following orders...blah...blah...blah...We've heard it all before!!! It is NOT our fault that you feel this way or that this happens...Complain all you want...It will get you nowhere! So you need to just deal with it like the rest of us peons! In fact, WE are just trying to do OUR jobs and we've been doing OUR jobs very well for quite a long time, thank you very much! Trust me when I say that your kind of salary is JUST NOT WORTH IT, if the goal is to turn people into evil, mind-numbed-to-hell yesmen who can inflict more evil and abuse on the next generation of unsuspecting workers...We know ALL about the vicious cycle, as we've seen it happen over and over again...The smart ones don't want to have any part of your stupid mind games and neither will they play them! This is the 21st Century, people, and the abusive behaviors have to stop! Many good people will quit their jobs or find new ones rather than deal with the day-to-day BS they have to put up with...Every retailer needs good people nowadays...Good help is even MORE extremely hard-to-find and your company, whatever it is, is not in the driver's seat anymore...The ball is in the court of the employees who can decide what they want to do or where they want to go...If the abusive behavior continues, a SIGNIFICANT number of good, albeit VERY GOOD and even GREAT people will get tired of your antics and leave...Good luck finding new replacements for them that will do their jobs half as good as the exceptional employees you just alienated and frustrated to no end!!! Let's see YOU try to do their jobs!!! You won't get very far...That I can tell you!!! Most of you have probably forgotten what it's even like to do their jobs!!! And that's IF you even cared in the first place!!!

Nevertheless, this is NOT high school and people need to be respected...and bosses have to EARN that respect...It is not freely given, no matter what you may think otherwise...and it's time more bosses start earning the respect of their employees rather than a damn paycheck that means absolutely nothing in the end! What, you're gonna take it with you when you go??? Good luck with that! How any of you can sleep at night with the type of cruel, controlling, wicked mindset you've been led to believe is "good" for your employees is beyond me!!! But, I can guarantee you this...In the game of LIFE (which I've been playing for many, many years now), in the end, it will ALL amount to a hill of beans and you'll have nothing but heartache, disillusionment, anger, frustration and pain to show for it! And it won't do you one damn bit of good!

Amen. Some of our managers just b**** for no reason at all and they think they're going to earn others respect by doing it. My department head says I'm not moving fast enough and doing my job. I know good and well I am because one of the managers complimented me a few weeks before our new department head came along. Considering the fact the new DH is late each night and in the backroom 75% of the night, they have no room to talk. They expect to get respect, but if you're like me they have to earn it. Complaining doesn't do any good if we're doing our jobs quickly and correctly. They wonder why people keep quitting. It's all because of low pay and get sick of their mouths.

Doubt youre doing a good job. Managers are usually right when they see a piss poor associate. You will respect us and we will just fire you and find another to fill your spot.you are EASILY replaceable and have no value. So do your job and gtfo

That "Slave Driving" post was interesting, though, now that you mention it...You mean to tell me that the poster's not right in what he's saying??? I beg to differ, as I know from EXPERIENCE where he's coming from...Say what you will, but trust me when I say it all makes sense now!!!

It goes both ways.

I had a manger like that when I worked for my last employer.

It was like walking on eggshells when I was around him.

Thats exactly how I am. I can't believe when someone tries to **** on me and actually thinks I will stay around them, or let them interact with me. Yeah right.

OK, then...From all the negative tough-guy piss-poor "rotten excuse for humanity" bully troll attitudes around here lately, it sounds to me like all of you should "man up" and become managers! If you can talk the talk, then why not walk the walk??? Too scared??? Sounds to me like you'd be perfect for the job! You sure as hell don't get PAID anything to treat people here like ****, so why don't you at least get a paycheck for doing it! You could be moving up instead of wasting your damn time on this forum with the rest of us peons!!!

 They probably are managers.

OP here...One more thing for you managers to keep in mind...Everything is about the tone of voice you use...You could have the most reasonable request in the world, but using the wrong tone of voice will only get you detractors, haters and back stabbers...Is that REALLY what you want??? Be careful what you wish for!!! You want people to do what you need them to do, but also feel like they are part of a productive and winning team? Watch how you talk to your employees...And don't bawl them out in front of customers! It's highly unprofessional, to say the least! And the customers see that stuff!!! Those same employees could turn on you in a minute (and in DROVES, by the way), if you don't give them a reason to stay...Have you ever heard the phrase "You catch more flies with honey than with vinegar"? Well, guess what??? It's ABSOLUTELY TRUE! I've had managers that I would move heaven and earth for, going ABOVE and BEYOND the call of duty because they respected me, gave me the benefit of the doubt and also gave me some leeway in how I do my job...They pitched in, too, and helped out when it became necessary...I respected them because they weren't afraid to roll up their sleeves and get to work like the rest of us...I've also had managers that I would do the bare minumum for and that's it, due to a simple thing like how they spoke to me and the tone of voice they used...You want some REAL work out of me??? Why not treat me like a damn human being, for cryin' out loud!!! And you just might get it!!! "You get what you give", as the song says...

If you're a manager, try doing things a little differently sometime and see what happens...This same-old, same-old mentality just isn't gonna work in the long run, because people can see through that **** now...

Also...One more thing...If you're afraid to get your suit dirty, this may not be the line of work for you...

Just a few more things to keep in mind!

Your job may pay better, but bad bosses are everywhere in every industry! How much is all the hassle worth to you? Can you even put a price on it? Hell, we even have a President that has made millions in his lifetime and even I wouldn't want his money, if it meant stepping over everyone else I didn't like just to get it...I wouldn't even want to work FOR him, no matter what he paid! I've got my sanity to protect! Personally, I'd rather hang out with all the poor people who are just trying to get through the day, because at least they're HONEST about their circumstances and life itself, for that matter...I've learned more from them in my time than anyone making a six-figure salary! Nowadays, it's almost like being your OWN boss is better than ALL of it frankly, if you can do it...Then, you're beholden to no one but yourself!

employees have all the power, just no one will stick together.  managers get ran out of store after store until they are eventually placed at corporate.  it just takes people sticking together.  which rarely happens.  the fact we are treated like this but have to pay the union for nothing is mind blowing.

Well, here's how you know things are bad...When your store manager is always looking over your shoulder and you're one of the employees who actually WORKS...When every time you turn around, there he or she is, but when you need him or her for something important, they are nowhere to be found...When you have people that have worked 30-40-50 years with the same company or just in the same industry (grocery) saying that they dread coming into work each day, when they used to just let little things slide off their backs...When you have longtime employees threatening to quit or ask to get transferred to a different store...When your 100% best job in your department is only about an 80% to the store manager, when it used to be 100% to every other manager except your current one, who's a psychotic perfectionist neat freak with issues...Not to mention that he or she thinks your department (or store) needs much improvement, when it's gotten nothing but stellar Google reviews in the past before your manager arrived and still gets good reviews...When your manager has trouble focusing on the big, important things and tends to nitpick the smallest issues and overlooks a lot of other pressing problems...When he or she plays favorites with people and everyone bends over backwards to help him or her and it's STILL not enough...

Oh, and when he or she tries to play the "friendly card" with you and you're having none of it, knowing full well that he or she could turn on you like a back stabber in a minute...

Those are signs you have a real problem!disbelief

And just for the record, I've counted 12 different store managers in the last 10-11 years alone in my own store and I'm probably forgetting some...Seems they come a dime a dozen these days and just when you think you've seen 'em all, along comes another doozy that makes you rethink that...Although one manager told me that we'll probably be at our stores long after the managers have come and gone...Many of us regular employees have stayed put over the last decade or longer, so I think he's right!

I've said this for years. The employees are the true idiots for not using their power. They would rather be jealous and turn against each other, instead of directing their anger at the real problem, the manager. Then they wonder why they aren't getting anywhere.
