I think someone is pulling your leg. According to labor laws, a company only has to pay double time if you work over 12 hours or if you work seven days a week and work over 8 hours on the 7th day. Of course they still have to pay time and a half if you work over 40 hours in week and for some people over 8 hours in a day.

UHH! Your store is open on Christmas day? I didn't think Kroger was open on Christmas. That is the one day a year they actually do close!

OP probably means Christmas Eve. Christmas Eve counts for holiday pay. In my division, you don't have to work on the day of the holiday (in this case, Christmas Eve, even though Christmas Day is the actual holiday, but Kroger is closed on that day) to get holiday pay, but if you do, you get what's called "Holiday Premium Pay" so for someone that's full time like me, I get an extra $0.50 an hour on top of my holiday pay being double time, but that's only because I'm full time. I have the option of only working 32 hours holiday weeks and still getting paid for 40, but I like the extra money, so I never take the extra day off. Part timers get time and a half, I think, and that's only after they've been with Kroger for a certain period of time. Again though, that's in my division.
