Are your Utility Clerks required to bag?

In our store we have Utility Clerks and Front End Baggers. They are listed separately on the schedule. I have been told it is the same job description. I am classified as Utility. Several years ago I was asked if I wanted to do Utility and I said yes thinking it would get me off the front end. I have been told it is a financial issue on why there is not a separate job code for these two positions. How is Utility handled in your store?

What state are you in?  It depends on your union contract.

In our contract, Michigan division, a utility clerk has the same job description as a courtesy clerk but has extra cleaning type tasks.

This is from Local 876 (2013-2017).  I don't have the current contract with me.

It is under:

"Appendix C -  miscellaneous notes."

Your contract may differ.

Send an email to your district union rep asking them to clarify a UC job tasks.  Go to Local 1996 website and send email to one of the union reps telling them what store you are at.

They can forward it to your Union rep.

Generally, a store manager can ask anyone to do any job in the store.  Exception is: Only meat department people are allowed to work in the meat department.  And, a UC and CC are not allowed to stock shelves except to do go backs or cleaning.  A UC is allowed to stock promo aisle stuff.    A clerk is a clerk.

I have seen department heads collecting shopping carts in 2" of snow/slush on Christmas Eve.  I have seen store managers bagging groceries on Christmas Eve too.

We, at my store, work as a team to get the job done.

They are separated for a reason.

That was me that said I try to stay away from the front end. Some are required to bag and some are not. Today one of the Utility Clerks was running a register. I have never ever ran a register and I never ever plan on it. I do bag sometimes and go get carts sometimes.

They bag sometimes.

One enjoys it because it gets her away from sweeps and trash.  The others get real pissy and use it an excuse not to do half their work for the day.

It's kind of funny.  One of them was a bagger who was shoved into that department because he was a terrible bagger.  He liked to just amble off the front end and wander the store.  I guess it got management thinking, if he's going to do that, why not push a broom?

In our store, our utility clerks are forbidden from bagging, let alone run a register. I once asked our CSM if I can have a utility clerk take a perishable reshop back if there's no baggers and they said to never ever do that. Carts, trash, clean up, is all I ever see them do.

Oooh, speaking of which. I recently saw a couple of our co-managers get on register during a wild surge of customers.

At my store, a utility clerk is the exact same position as a bagger. However the UC position is given to special needs baggers, ones who will never get promoted. I think the UC pay is capped at 12.

You stayed away from front end because you are a dimwit, and can't add or subtract and you freak out whenever you're expected to do amyanyth besides press buttons on the register.

According to the Union contract (Local 1996) managers are NOT allowed to be on registers-ever. Is it that way in your store too?

That is why UC and CC's need and DESERVE wage increases for the reasons listed on the list Anonymouse1 posted. We have a UC and CC who keep EVERY single piece if money they find. Its not much but they do. ANY change found left in coinstar, ground, or in the change things are kept.

I edited pic to show current contract.  It is identical to previous contract except this has entire section on it.

A cc and uc should not run registers unless they are classified as a cashier.  I doubt managers are allowed to run registers or stock shelves except for emergencies like half the employees call in.  Managers are allowed to fill shelves from shippers, set up shippers and help with holiday filling.  A district union rep would pee themself if they walked in the store and saw these rules broken.  Store can be fined and whoever called them might get a reward.

What state are you in?  It depends on your union contract.
