That's a tough one, cuz I know what you mean. I had to deal with that many times over the years I worked retail.
Best thing I found was to walk away. You engage with them, you're out a job. Period. And I think permanantly losing my paper over a temporary squabble with an ******* isn't worth it.
Hmm, ya, I guess you're right. That is pretty much what I've been doing. I just walk away without saying anything. Probably why I still have the job, lol. Although, I sometimes give them a disappointing stern look before I do.

I hear ya. Bear in mind, tho: if you happen to see em out in public, well.......all rules of engagement are in effect
It's hard at time, but I just smile and tell them to have a nice day.
They want to rattle you and it's satisfying to me that they know, that they haven't.
What KIND of insult? Several months ago we had a customer call one of our cashiers aq n***r-we called for the manager and the customer was thrown out and told not to come back

Back in the day before ebt there was paper Food Stamps. A man said once I didnt know yall took that Afican money.
We need to bring back the paper food stamps! Might discourage people from wanting them! Get a job & buy your own food! Can't afford to feed your kid(s)? Should've taken precautions in the first place! Why do tax payers have to pay for your mistake(s)? Have you had more kids since going on government assistance? Probably so! Have you looked in to birth control or getting a tubal ligation or vasectomy in order to prevent future pregnancies while receiving government assistance? Probably not!
I like to take the indirect backhanded approach. For instance, once this woman and her boyfriend came up to me and the woman complained to me that one of the little card signs was blocked by some product because of the way we had to stock it. So I said to her, "Well, I trust that my customers have enough common sense to move the item momentarily to read the sign." She didn't have a comeback for that one. She just got mad and walked away, her boyfriend following behind her. Good times.
