The pay rate is very low for cashiers who often end up being baggers as well. A top performaning store such as 884 in Nashville where I work should get decent pay. I feel all employees should be paid based on performance across the boatd.

Like, let's say Kroger decides to pay cashiers in certain stores, or ones who go above a certain speed, a bonus. Those cashiers will be happier sure, but when it's time to re-do the contract, are they going to fight as hard for better pay across the board? And are they going to see their pay as being linked to Kroger, or to the union? They might even decide the union is worthless and drop out...

Unions reward mediocrity, which is bad if you're above-average, but for most people that suits them just fine.

Pay based on performance, that is an interesting concept. Currently the highest performing workers in my store are the ones getting the lowest pay or the older employees that have been with Kroger a while. The head clerks, backups with max pay scale are the ones always on Facebook, texting and talking about who is cool or not. I guess it is the way I was raised. I am young but I have a work ethic. I clock in take care of customers and keep stock up on the floor so we can all get paid. I see my manager that is my age not working, always on their cell phone and taking 1 hour breaks (for years) and no one seems to care. I can not imagine doing anything like that because I would feel horrible about myself. It is not fair but hey nothing is really.

Eh, I don't know about that.  Sounds like it might cut into shareholder profits.
