Build a career with kroger

Okay, So I went through the training to become a Lead, got the title Deli Lead Assistant, transferred to another store, then told I wasn't the Deli Lead assistant (but still carry the title. I asked about how to move up and finish my training to be a Lead and was told that i need to seak with the coordinator. I asked about how you move up even further than the Lead position and was told "They have too many managers as it is. There are no positions available." Yet they still have this "Build a career with Kroger" thing going on. If they aren't willing to train you for the positions and aren't looking for the people to fill the positions, how do you build a career? How do you move up? It's impossible. Especially when you carry a title, told you aren't the title you carry and you aren't being paid for the title you carry. That's no Career. I would just like an honest answer and title. No need for a career, because I'll be able to retire soon anyway!

Being as honest as I possibly can, I would say that "moving up" can and does happen with Kroger, but the process may be very, very slow, to average, to very fast, depending on a lot of variables........what area are you in, how many stores are in your area and how far apart they are located, is there a lot of turnover rate as far as managers, leads, etc are concerned.

Are there lots of prospective leads/backups/managers all striving to move upward at the same time in your particular division or district?    Just keep in mind this stuff of moving upward can take A LOT of time, sometimes over many years. In other words, think "slow motion". You cannot automatically expect to be quickly promoted from one position to another, just because Kroger is constantly (as a matter of routine) stressing there is a possibility of making Kroger a career.

However, as it has been said on this forum in the past, sometimes employees ARE promoted very quickly, for various reasons........if no one else wants the position, or someone has quit on short notice and they are hurting for a lead, or there are few competitors for a certain position within your particular store or district.

You want a career, leave kroger.  Hourly paid job =/= career.  For Christ's sake, better yourselves and get out of there.  You want to be 75 years old still trying to stock shelves with a hunchback, still working weekends and evenings?  I don't.

You can "Get a Job, stay for a Career", but like Kroger-Employee said, there are multiple factors. In reality, I see the number of Lead positions being downsized, previously they were called Department Heads. In reality any job can become a career, not everyone is going to be a Doctor, Lawyer or Pilot. The company could really do a better job at in-store career development/motivation. I remember hearing a VP/PRES making a comment about the Tuition $3500,"we are developing people to leave". But in reality the $3500, it trying to get associates to stick around. It costs $1500-$2000 to hire someone (HR costs, Training costs), without considering the cost current associates have to pay.

I wonder what applicants are being told in their interviews. In the Local 1996 area, we are SO short staffed that even new hires are starting to quit after 2 weeks. I imagine hiring managers are stretching the truth a bit just to get warm bodies in the store. The recruiting literature in our store is so whitewashed. I would love to hear from recent applicants/hires that have had an interview what you are being told about the REALITY of working at Kroger (I bet they don't tell you about the crazy customers!)

Either save money and leave or work on something else when you're off the clock. They're looking for a Frozen Lead where I am that pays 15+ an hour due to as stated: the turnover rate. I even said if they want to keep stockers, people in frozen and dairy, you gotta' atleast pay them some good wages enough to stay. Our store is still hiring folks at 8 bucks an hour while Walmart down the street is hiring overnight stockers for 12 bucks an hour + overnight premium plus bonuses and raises & potential to move up. Even Target is starting people out at at an atleast livable rate and they don't get half the business our Kroger does. Kroger needs to stop being stingy and spread the wealth.

Don't ever believe that KR isn't making any money! They thrive on greed and costcutting at the top and its mandated down thru the system. Years ago this company was a good, fair company and a good place to make a career- but that was many years ago! With the crazy profiteer CEO and Board of Directors that are in charge now it has turned into the ultimate EVIL EMPIRE. For a couple decades profits were ever increasing and each quarter was almost always better than the last but eventually it reached a plateau and profits, sales remained flat. Then the bloodletting began with committees at general office masterplanning how to further and further cut costs- damn the employees and their benefits! What was a well organized and ran company turned into a collection of third party garbage operators, the dependable and knowledgeable full time staffs were done away with and the stores were expected to operate on 70% part time low pay/no benefits mostly transient employees. Of course the mighty Board of Directors turned the screws on this current CEO to ramrod all this through. Even though the stores are at an all time low morale, bottom feeder mgmt, tremendously short staffed creating dirty, out of stock, out of help stores and KR reputation is quickly going to hell in a handbasket no one in the 8 layers of mgmt at their General Office dare bring in the true facts when asked by their superiors. All and I mean all the worthwhile, good employees especially in store mgmt are long gone along with their loyal ex full time employees. Find another job- the only remaining chain worth working for is Publix. Retail as a whole has been reformatted as a brainless, thankless job so do yourself and your family a big favor by learning a skilled job and saying adios to KR- whether you're a bagger or a co manager or a long suffering dept head- find your way out now- there's a much better future waiting for you!
