Kroger people won't remember this but they often spoke of how nobody is locked in at 40 hours. We got a transfer employee from another store (hes worked with the company for 2 years). They say he's a "40 hour guy" hey hey hey wait a minute, you was saying there was no such thing as guaranteed 40 hours not that long ago.
In my contract, full time are guaranteed 40 hours. They get their 40 hours first. Part time are guaranteed 12 hours a week. They can be given 0 hours one week and be ineligible for unemployment.
To remain full time, we have to average at least 36 hours a week to keep 8 hour ph days.
I have read some language in our contract that in an emergency situation, full time hours can be cut below 40 hours. Sales have to be really bad for that to kick in. Other divisions may be similar.
In reality, turn around and call ins and lack of work ethic and growth in sales at my store allow most of my part timers to have 40 hours if they want.
Lately, our night crew has had more and more tasks added to our workload. I am fine with that as long as they keep hiring more bodies and don't complain about the hours I am using
when I write the schedule. My managers' only request so far is to keep overtime to a bare minimum.
While the contract tells you to maintain status you need XXX hours, there has always been a rule to schedule all FT people 40 hours. This isn't saying schedule people 40 hours whenever, but rather schedule when staffing is needed, hours available. Why hire another associate to work here and there, if people there want the hours and it not OT. In reality you schedule FT people 40 hours to eliminate the possible "back end" expenses, Healthcare..etc.
As far as my union goes at least, you can get locked in at full time 40 hours a week. I know because I have. When I started I was part time getting 30 something a week. But I would stay over each day til I got at least 8 hours a day. So I worked 8 hours a day, 5 days a week, for 12 weeks straight and bam I got locked in. I talked with our union person at them time. And I mean the actual union guy. Not the union Stuird at our store.hw told me to get locked in, you would have to do at least 40 hour each week for 12 weeks straight. If you go over 40 that's ok it still counts. As long as you hit 40 or more. No less. But you have to do it straight for 12 weeks. You cannot call in. You have to work the schedule. I was scheduled for 5 days, less than 8 hours most days so I made them 8 hours. You also cannot take vacations or personal days.
