Need Info on Being a Produce Backup Please
Permalink

Hi. I've been working in produce for Kroger for over 5 years now. My manager recently pulled me into the office the other day to tell me he was proud of how I've been stepping up lately. He extended an offer to me to join the ADL program to become a Produce Backup. I take pride in my job and I would like to learn as much as I can. Besides that and the pay raise, having management **** would look good on my resume for future jobs as well. Anyway, I would like any guides, suggestions, advice from other produce backups and produce managers that could help me in this next chapter, if you will. Thanks!

First off, congrats!

If you've been in produce for 5 years, it sounds like you've already got the basic standards down-- that's the biggest part of the whole role.

You definitely want to train and coach other associates on the standards as well and ensure that they are following those practices. This isn't just your dept head's responsibility. Teaching your folks will make your life easier on the days your are filling in for your produce manager.

IDK what your dept head is like, but it's very important to have a good relationship with them. Ya'll are a team and it'll make your lives easier to function like one.

I would also warn you that it can be hard to move up into a management position at the same place you were once a clerk (at least it was for me). Be ready to play hard ball with the associates that may not listen to you or still think of you as their pal or a clerk. To me, this was the hardest part about moving into a backup position. It gets easier with time-- don't let it discourage you from keeping the position.

Good luck!! :)

Remember, too, if you become a backup and you' re already respected by your peers for your hard work and otherwise, it'll be much easier for you...If you're not respected by your peers, it may be harder to transition into that position, as you might "step on some toes"...We have one such guy who has been groomed for when our dept. manager eventually retires...I don't want to jinx anything, but I hope he gets the spot, because he's worked VERY hard for it...And I would have no problem giving him the respect he's due...And the thing is...when and if that happens, he'll know that his "produce people" come first...If you can't trust, fight for and lead your people, then what's the purpose??? The great thing, though, is that we work very well as a team, and even I can say that I've learned quite a bit from our dept. manager, as I'm sure all of us in the department have...So, that's another thing...Learn as much as you can from your department manager now...It will all come in handy for the future and you can pass on that knowledge and guidance to the rest of your team!

Thank you. This is all good advice. I just hope I have what it takes to manage this. It seems like a lot to take on all at once. The thing that worries me the most is my speed. I hope I can become very fast at it because time has never been on my side in my entire life. lul

Thank you. My dept head said if i go through with this ADL program, I will have to leave my store and go to another one since we already have a backup. I dont necessarily like that part. I got my store down very well now. I just hope I can do just as good or better wherever I go.
