I had orientation on Wednesday and have worked every day since then. My orientation was 15 minutes followed by computer training.

I was told they wanted me in Clicklist instead of CC so I have been training there.

I haven't been told my pay. (Was told it was based on position and prior work experience) Online it still says 7.50 which is the rate for CC

I was told a union exists, but nothing about it and didn't meet a rep and have no clue as to most of the rules of Kroger because I don't have a handbook.

 

What the f--- is going on?

I worked at a Kmart for Christ's sake and it ran better than this even during the liquidation of the store.

stay in school if you can.  You're going to make less than minimum wage most likely for a little while, then you move up to min wage.  Real competitive pay LOL

Find out who the union steward is and talk to them. They should be able to answer any questions as well as give you the name of your union rep and the number to call your rep. Also talk to the hr person or management about getting a handbook and anything else you need to know.

Welcome to Kroger. Expect more mediocrity and disorganization from now on.

At least you got an orientation. I never got one when I started in my store. They only very recently started having orientations at my store after our new HR manager was hired. We haven't had an official HR manager in over a year! (One of the store co-managers was handling their duties). 

Keep asking questions to the HR manager and store managers about which department they want to put you in and your pay. Keep asking about the union, they should have a number to get you in touch with a union rep.

At least, for me, when I started the HR manager told me what my schedule would be like for the next two weeks. It wasn't official, so the front end managers had to override me in the timeclock every time.

They also should have given you an Enterprise ID number. This is the ID you use to log into the website greatpeople.me where you can view your official schedule and other stuff such as your pay rate, what department you're in, and your paystubs. I setup the password for mine when I took the computer training.

 Our break room has a giant bulletin board filled with all sorts of info about the union. Phone numbers to call, names of people in the union, what to do when such and such happens, when the next union event is happening.

Sounds like the normal hiring process. Its funny, some Divisions have a "Training Center" that is to "onboard" most new associates. By "onboard" I mean they tell you most of the HR PR, but leave out most of the day to day stuff. Oh, if your HR person was doing stuff correctly, they can actually get your hours coded in the computer system to actually clock in.......

If you were hired for a CC and they places you in Clicklist, they must have been seriously desperate. Nothing against you, its just a weird job change. I think all the Clicklist Associates are getting "Coached" to be faster, more accurate, etc....which is causing them to quit. Clicklist isn't a had job, its just boring at times and associates are always parking their blue carts in the way of everyone.

 That's why this makes no sense to me. Why is a business as successful as Kroger so bad at communication and training?

Online Orders were a job requirement for me at Kmart so I believe that's why they decided to move me. I was hired by someone who wasn't HR as CC and the HR Manager changed me to Clicklist when we talked. Online it still says Courtesy Clerk and says my pay is 7.50, but I have been working in Clicklist and cross-training as a Cashier, so I am very confused. Is it allowed for them to pay me 7.50 for a job that pays more?

 

Also, at every other job I've had I had to sign a paper agreeing to my hourly wage before I could start work. Is this not something required at Kroger?

I don't know the laws where you're at, but I am in CO, and as far as I know they are allowed to pay you your normal wage regardless of where you're working; they consider it "training." As a CC, I was trained as a checker, and as a checker I am trained at the service desk, fuel center, and I work as a head clerk with booth/ safe access, computers/ reports, and timeclock override access. I am making my normal wage of ~$12 an hour regardless of what I work. Over half the checkers at my store are not trained in any of it, and head clerks make at least $20 an hour. 
Kroger doesn't care about what you work, how hard you work, or how much you can do. It's a gerontocracy, not a meritocracy. The only reason I put up with it is 
1. Boredom, I can't stand standing in a register for hours on end asking the same few questions on repeat like a robot

2. Leverage, they rely on me so much at this point that as long as I don't do anything too crazy they pretty much won't write me up for anything because at any time I have the right to say "I'm not doing this anymore."

3. A good reference for when I find a company that actually cares about its employees.

I'm still trying to figure out why anyone would willingly work for a company that pays so ridiculously little.

Then I try to comprehend why anyone would willingly pay a f u c k i n g UNION that actually supports those wages.

But after reading enough of the posts and responses on here, it's clear most Kroger employees are mentally challenged persons who very likely would never find work any where else any way.

To the O.P., if that doesn't describe you, then like the other guy said---stay in school. Not in school? Get in school.

Hmm, you got the fancy training.  When I was hired, the union talked to us before anything and pressured most of into signing up, and then we watched some VHS cassettes.  The computers were allegedly broken, so we skipped all that.

They want you in Clicklist because you are probably over 18 and they have an opening.  That's it.

The pay is minimum wage unless you have an inside connection.

The union is in Kroger's pocket and is otherwise toothless and disinterested.  If you are in a right to work state, you don't even have to pay them unless you are stupid.  You don't get a handbook even if you are in the union.  

The problem with handbooks and such is that if you know the rules, it causes problems for both the store and the the union.  Neither party wants that.  I dare you to call the union to ask for a handbook.  They won't even pick up.

I would say the thing about Kroger is that working here past drinking age is a life mistake.  Disappointment and disorganization is to be expected, and I suspect the company is coasting on the competence of yesteryear. 

You're smart enough to work a computer (or smartphone) to get here, so I am convinced that you can (and should) do better.  Keep up the job search.  It's sad when even Walmart offers higher starting pay.

I'm not going to suck up to the company - i've had my fair share of issues too - but these guys are being a little overdramatic.

You need to know your starting wage? Ask the HR manager. That's what they're there for... Start the job and see how you like it. Clicklist isn't a bad job at all, it's only as difficult as the people try to make it out to be. It's self explanatory, all you're doing is going right to where the thing says you're going, and if your store is like mine there are tags on the floor that tell you exactly what part of the aisle the item is in.

 Wrong click list is terrible! Dont listen to these horrible ASS ociates. They dont even VALUE US the customer but its ok because they choose to do that they get tiny paycheck weekly. App to walmart no worthless union and way better pay

I asked my HR person and she said she would let me know soon. So not much of a change from before. Also, I am in high school and have been accepted into a technical school so this isn't a career move for me. I just need it long enough to get through school.

I have decided against joining the union since I live in a right-to-work state and it seems like a bit of a scam. I am still a bit irked that I can get in trouble for breaking rules that I haven't been told. I have done Click List twice now, once as picker and once as attendant. It is super easy, but so monotonous. Props to all the CL people because I don't know how you do it. I worked the register once and it is pretty similar to what I've done in the past so it was preferable to CL for me

That's weird. I went to orientation Saturday and it lasted three hours and then I start my computer courses tomorrow. They called me before I got the background check back and told me my starting pay would be $11.30 an hour. I'd call the store you interviewed at.

LOL- sorry to laugh, but your experience sounds EXACTLY like mine when I started. It's a mess.. I've never worked for a company that has so little training, so little info and so little understanding of what they're doing.

Get used to everyone (including managers) saying... "Nothing Kroger's does makes sense, get used to it" I've seen emails from "corporate or district level" employee's and the grammar and spelling are HORRID... I mean, in today's technology, how do you have misspelled words? I figure, if higher-ups can't even put out a proper email, how would you expect the stores to make any sense?

 Depends on contract in your district. Clicklist may pay more than courtesy clerk, but depends on the area. Find out the name of your local ufcw, then go to their website and look for the contract. Also you may be able to contact your local union through Facebook. You can try clicklist, if you don't like it try to move on to another department.
