Question for those of you that are floor supervisors
Permalink

One of my managers asked me to take cashier training to be a backup cashier when it gets busy plus be a PT floor supervisor. Do any of you that are FS's get extra pay for that role? My manager tried to get me extra money but was turned down flat. So I didn't take the offer-he said he would do the same thing if he wasn't offered more money!

Extra money or not I would never train to be a cashier at this day and age. Customers are the biggest *******s ever.

No extra pay just the potential to move up the latter at the same rate of pay with more work.  I'd do it.  I missed my chance and I'm kicking my self now because I'm held back and never allowed to advance.  Take the opportunity and move up into a better place.  Prove you're a hard worker and promotion comes unless you're at a store run by lazy people and they promote incompetence.

It can be worth it. I get bored in a register, and as stated definitely helps you get you foot in the door if you want to move further in the company. If you don't have management/ leadership experience it also helps get you some which helps on a resume. It's all up to your preferences; if none of those appeal to you, then don't bother. If it's not helping you move to better things, and it's not a type of job that would make you happier, then it isn't worth it. I have been trained as a FES for around two years now and I feel that it has helped me grow some skills I was lacking. That said, it is really frustrating to not be paid equally for the same work.

Floor supervisors just stand around all day. Easy job.

Out by my area, you aren't becoming an FES without going up the rungs first. I can almost guarantee that it is a job standard to be cashier trained if you want to be anything on FE above a UC / bagger. Otherwise why should you be trusted with a managers override if you don't know the operations of the register / money handling. It doesn't add up. Our FES's are very much active, whether they are service desk, running SCOs, cashiering / bagging, or doing other tasks at the time, and even sometimes helping pull carts once in a while if they want or it's needed, an FES can pretty much by me be capable of doing almost everything on FE.

For me, the automation is a big reason why I'm glad I got off the front end years ago. If you know you're only using checking as a very temporary stepping stone to a higher position, sure, go for it, but if you're looking for somewhere to settle down long term I don't feel like there's any job security left on the front end. Not with Amazon's register-free "Go" store undoubtedly a sign of the future. I'm sure things won't move that quickly, and I'm hoping to be out within five years, but to future people looking for jobs...
